What is Sound? Sound is a form of energy that travels in longitudinal waves The energy is caused by vibrations

Pitch How high or low the sound seems to be

AMPLITUDE The more energy a sound wave has, the higher the amplitude The higher the amplitude the louder the sound

Sound Quality Even, smooth waves produce pleasant sounds Rough, un-even waves produce noise

Breaking glass with sound http://www.teachersdomain.org/asset/lsps07_vid_glassbreak/

Electromagnetic radiation Transverse waves What is Light? Light waves: consist of energy in the form of electric and magnetic fields Electromagnetic radiation Transverse waves

Electromagnetic Spectrum

REFLECTION: light wave hits material, energized electrons vibrate slightly, then send energy back out. Light wave doesn’t fully penetrate the material.

Law of Reflection The incidence ray and the reflected ray are equal.

REFRACTION The bending and scattering of light

DIFFRACTION The bending of waves around small objects, and spreading out of waves past small openings
