Important People during the Civil War *You only need to record the people in RED!

Republican Party In 1854, the Republican party was formed. Its major goal was to stop the spread of slavery and keep it out of the western US.

Abraham Lincoln (a Republican) became the 16th President in the election of 1860. He remained the President of the US during the Civil War.

Sam Houston was elected governor of Texas in 1859. Houston’s goal was to prevent Texas from seceding. When Texas became the 7th state to secede in 1861, Houston refused to take an oath to the Confederacy. He gave up his office as governor of Texas.

Francis Lubbock was elected as Texas’s first Confederate governor.

Jefferson Davis was President of the Confederate States during the Civil War.

General Robert E. Lee Commander of all Confederate troops “Texans! The fighters from other states had their reputations to gain, but the sons of the defenders of the Alamo had theirs to maintain. I am sure you will be faithful to the trust” -Robert E. Lee

General Ulysses S. Grant Commander of all Union (US) troops

John Reagan Was appointed as postmaster general of the Confederacy Worked to cut expenses and make post office self-sufficient Towards the end of the Civil War, Reagan became Secretary of the Treasury. He was captured along with Jefferson Davis and Francis Lubbock. He was sent to solitary confinement for 22 weeks.

General John Bell Hood Commander of Hood’s Texas Brigade , perhaps the finest brigade of Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Later became a division commander in several major Civil War battles including Gettysburg. In that battle, he received a severe wound to his left arm, which remained incapacitated for the rest of his life In 1863 he and his division accompanied Gen. James Longstreet's Army of Northern Virginia to Tennessee, where the corps played a crucial role in the battle of Chickamauga. Hood was shot in the upper right thigh, a wound that necessitated the amputation of his leg. On February 1, 1864, after a period of convalescence, he was promoted to lieutenant general and transferred to the Army of Tennessee as a corps commander. In July 1864, he was given command of the Army of Tennessee. Relieved of command at his own request on January 23, 1865, Hood was attempting to make his way to Texas when the Confederacy collapsed.

General Sibley & Thomas Green led Texas forces into northern New Mexico and claimed it and Arizona for the Confederacy. The goal was to take control of the Southwest from New Mexico to California to gain gold, silver and Pacific ports. Sibley’s army was weakened by disease, lack of food and water. After a fierce battle at Glorieta Pass, New Mexico, Sibley’s army was forced to retreat back to Texas. The Union kept control of the Southwest.

Confederate Surrender On April 9th 1865 Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia. Four years of war 630,000 lives lost Over 1,000,000 casualties
