Tarrare (Tarare) By: shaunna stadtfeld

Background on tarrare: Born in rural france, near lyon, in 1772 Birth was unrecorded, don’t even know if tarrare is his real name Had a huge appetite, ate a strange amount of meat Forced to leave home as a teenager, parents couldn’t provide toured the country with a roaming band of thieves and prostitutes 1788, Tarrare moved to Paris to work as a street performer Joined the French revolutionary army At the start of the War of the First Coalition General Alexandre de Beauharnais employed him as a courier by the French army Tarrare, could not speak German, and was captured by Prussian forces, severely beaten and underwent a mock execution before being returned tried to treat hunger with laudanum, tobacco pills, wine vinegar and soft-boiled eggs attempted to drink the blood of other patients in the hospital and to eat the corpses in the hospital morgue. Ejected from hospital because he was suspected of eating a toddler.

Crime Date Victim(s) Punishment There are no crimes that Tarrare was convicted of, but he did eat animals: such as dogs and cats. which could be seen as animal cruelty. Also was suspected of eating several people, which is a federal offense.

*most recent crime: (around his age of 17) He became involved with eating several animals (alive) as street shows to “entertain people”

Evidence against criminal & sentence: Witnesses of him eating animals for street shows Records of him in hospital(trying to drink blood of patients and eat dead ones) Thoughts of him eating toddler Unique diet He was sent to mental hospital, was released and died later of tuberculosis

Cultural references: Article: THE MAN WHO ATE EVERYTHING- by: yamatosaxon Movie: The Silence of the Lambs- by: Thomas Harris https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuX2MQeb8UM Tv shows: Criminal minds- season 3 episode 8

Theory on his deviant behavior: I Believe that Tarrare (tarare) is between ritualism and rebellion. Since he has tried to do well in life in the beginning but continued to get his goals and dreams shot down he turned to ritualism. This meaning that he no longer sought after his goals of going somewhere in life and did little jobs here and there since nothing in his life went well. He did go after legitimate means finding several jobs and joining the army. He also can be looked upon as rebellion in the ways of he’s going against society and what we define as normal. He tried looks at him self seeing that his birth parents gave him up, that it was becoming impossible to exist in society from the day that he was born. That he tried to do right and join the army, yet they no longer needed him either. Tarrare tired to fit into the normal but it wad no something he was born to do. And since he couldn’t fit in he did his own thing, filling his crave for attention with his unique apatite. Tarrare fell under the trap of society control theory, letting the incident from him past and what society says from that control why he never was able to “fit in”.
