Overview of LERF Status, Plans and Goals

LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15 Outline Introduction and goals Status of Resuscitation Plans for immediate run (October) Plans for later runs LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15 LERF provides a unique resource for accelerator research and applications in Nuclear and Materials research. On-going activities include: DarkLIGHT Beam-time request submitted Resuscitation activities ongoing Starting detailed beamline design and halo study Isotope Production Have funds for full proposal Project E (EUVFEL design) Waiting for DOE approval of CRADA Potential risk reduction experiments using LERF Other Diagnostic studies Positron production (proposed) MEIC studies (LDRD) LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15 Goals for FY 2016 Verify F100 operation Verify Dark Light setup operation Run Dark Light experiment Phases 1a and 1b Produce proposal for isotope production Carry out risk reduction experiments for Project E. LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15 F100 Installed in Vault LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

DarkLIGHT Experiment - Status Phase I: funded by NSF MRI: $1M approximately Install magnet and detector in place of current IR wiggler Reuse existing solenoid magnet, use prototype GEM trackers and silicon detectors, funds low-pressure target & differential pumping system (under construction using elements of windowless gas target of OLYMPUS experiment) Phase II: (complete experiment): $5-10M Collaboration seeking future funding LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15 Beam Requirements 100 MeV beam energy (~6 MV/m mean gradient) Up to 10 mA beam current (5 mA for phase 1) Unpolarized beam Small energy spread. Complete energy recovery Repetition rate 75 MHz In the future, need to switch to optimum repetition rate and different gun technology. LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15 Resuscitation Status Gun is ready for operation. DLPC is working with simulated RF. Accelerator is aligned. All vacuum levels are good. Zones 1, 2 and 4 have operated at usable gradients F100 is commissioned without beam 92 MV voltage Average Gradient = 16.4 MV/m Average Q0= 1.6 x 1010 Average FE onset = 12.7 MV/m (71 MV) All bulk supplies have been run through hysteresis. Server upgrade is done. Working on TStep deck for machine (current and DL). LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15 To be Completed Injector Drive laser aligned RF to drive laser. Install and check out magnets and viewer between gun and booster. Drive laser RFCM upgrade (by April) DLPC upgrade (mostly done, complete by April) Diagnostics Get viewers working Restore M55 system and Happek Hot Check out Magnets Verify trim rack functionality Check rasters on 1G dump verify back leg magnets in IR mode polarity checks on quads, correctors Hot Check-out of 1.5 kW supplies LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15 To be Completed (cont.) Vacuum Complete Vacuum system upgrades Fast valves hook-up Hot Check Out RF and SRF Check out zone 3 RF and cavity performance when vacuum work is done. MPS Replace LeCroy with SSG spare Make sure the insertable dump functions Miscellaneous Develop LERF Element Database (LED) (by April) Develop procedures and troubleshooting guide (by April) LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15 Proposed FY2015-16 Schedule June-Sept. 2015 Machine resuscitation without beam (VA Commonwealth funds) Sept. 30, 2015 Internal readiness review. Oct. 19-30,2015 Resuscitate IR line with wiggler open. Dec. 7-9 2015 Dark Light Readiness review (Physics). Nov.-Mar. 2015 Install Dark Light magnets. Complete drive laser upgrade. April 2016 Check out transport through magnets. Summer 2016 Install Dark Light phase 1b and run with low current beam. Install Dark Light phase 1a (internal target) and take data with high current beam. LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15 October run Hot Check out week of October 12. Run October 19-30 with operators. Run 12 hours/day, 5 days/week. Run with Dark light energy (100 MeV), charge (60 pC) and longitudinal match (complete energy recovery). Musts: Cross train operators Recirculate CW beam Shoulds: Recirculate 5 mA beam for extended period Run at higher energy LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

Nov.-Mar. Installation Activities Must: Perform Readiness Review (Dec. 7-9) Pull out IR wiggler and THz chicane Measure and characterize solenoid Install all Dark Light magnets Install beam tube through the solenoid with new valve This will be funded by WFO between MIT and Jlab LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15 April run Run with Dark light configuration and magnetic lattice but no internal target. Still run 12 hrs/day, 5 days/wk. Two weeks of running. Musts: Operators run the machine CASA owns the lattice using LED Recirculate 5 mA CW beam Shoulds: Migrate LERF tools to CEBAF equivalents as much as possible Use final HCO procedures integrated with LED LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15 Spring Installation Slide solenoid to extracted position. Install the detectors in the solenoid and wire up. Install the Phase 1b apparatus in place of the solenoid. Most of this work will be done by MIT personnel. May need a few man-weeks of support from installation techs. LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15 Summer run This should require two separate runs of 6 weeks and 2 weeks each separated by about two weeks of work to change experiments. Still running 12 hours/day, 5 days/week. The Operations department will run the accelerator for the Users according to the LOD and the COO. LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15

LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15 Summary Resuscitation run will test subsystems in October and complete resuscitation process. April run and FY 2016 maintenance should incorporate LERF into CEBAF operations. Summer run should demonstrate LERF as a DOE-NP user facility. Future applications will require their own Readiness Reviews LERF Readiness Review 9/30/15
