Purpose To develop a vocabulary to describe humor and various responses to humor To differentiate types of humor and responses to humor

Terms Sarcastic Smile Witty Ironic Guffaw Chuckle Cute Snicker Amusing Smirk Outburst Irreverent Giggle Hysterical Titter Mirthful Groan Laughable Light-hearted Mocking

Small Groups Using an iPod, dictionary, and thesaurus, work as a team to define as many terms as you can in 10 minutes. Separate the terms into two categories and title the categories. Revisit the anticipation guide and determine which situation fits the context for each term.

Degrees of Humor Sort Look at your humorous vocabulary Working in small groups, determine the intensity using the chart on the next slide. (Example) amusing is less intense than hysterical DELETE THIS TEXT BOX!!!!! This is a whole class assignment, check the notes section. Possibly do not do next slide. Teacher could have the words on note cards, enough for each group. Or just one set and divide among the students…As a class, put words on large pieces of paper and give to students. In a class discussion, decide the sort and then hang on the wall. 5

Degrees of Humor Description of Humor Intended Response (least intense) (most intense) HINT: Arrange words on sticky notes in order before you write them down.
