Mathematics & Common core state standards (CCSS) Curriculum Shifts What does this mean for my student?

8 mathematical practices Describe mathematical habits of mind Connect with content standards in each grade Offer standards for mathematical proficiency: reasoning, problem solving, modeling, decision making, and engagement Emphasize modeling with mathematics, and making connections to real-world application

Let’s TRY A Problem Jason, Kevin, and Nathan each spent exactly $9.00 at the same snack bar. Jason bought 3 bags of peanuts Kevin bought 2 bags of peanuts and 2 pretzels Nathan bought 1 bag of peanuts, 1 pretzel, and 1 milk shake What is the total cost, in dollars, of 1 bag of peanuts? Show or explain how you got the answer.

Teacher role ***** Struggling to figure out the problem vs. How did we all solve the problem? How many different ways did we find? ***** Struggling to figure out the problem vs. ***** Struggling with the content

Curriculum shifts LOTS! Library has the actual standards/resources Many BIG changes Idea – teach fewer things WELL!!! Scary as a parent, but exciting nonetheless– Just imagine - your child will be forced to think about mathematics

THE GOOD NEWS!!! We have been doing these 8 practices all along CMP is completely similar with limited explanations/samples and continued thought processes This is just a new way to look at it/a new name for it

Teacher’s Role Provide meaningful, real world, authentic, performance-based tasks (non traditional work problems) and not just skill practice Provide opportunities and time for discussing problems, cooperative problem solving and reciprocal teaching Allow for reasoning to take place in a safe environment

Parent’s role Encourage them, even when they’re struggling Difficulties What can we do about it? Encourage them, even when they’re struggling Understand that it will not always be easy for them Allow them to see the growth they can make when they make mistakes Google/talk to teachers/look through kids’ notes when they’re struggling Students should attempt all homework – right or wrong
