Andy Warhol and Pop Art Once you “got” Pop, you could never see a sign the same way again. And once you thought Pop, you could never see America the same way again. --Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol 1928-1987 American Famous artist of the Pop Art Movement: Pop artists used the everyday and made it art by using bold, flat colors to portray goods Warhol appropriated (used without permission) images from magazines, newspapers, and press photos of the most popular celebrities of the time His studio was name “The Factory,” to reflect goods that were massed produced Andy Warhol

Georgia O’Keefe: Blazing a Trail for Women Born on 1887 in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Died in 1986. From a very young age, she said she would be an artist. Painted until she lost her eyesight completely. Distinctly American- she did not care what was going on in European Art. Perhaps the most influential female artist of the 20th century.

O’Keefe in Flowers Characteristics of Work: Painted giant, detailed, almost surreal paintings of flowers Innovative in using brilliant, bold colors with simple patterns and shapes. Examples of influences in her work: She painted large, bright flowers. Some considered her work controversial and sexual. “I have painted what each flower is to me and I have painted it big enough so that others would see what I see.” Hibiscus with Plumeria

New York Metropolitan Museum of Art – (notice how my shirt matches, TOTALLY unplanned! )

O’Keefe- Ghost Ranch Period O’Keefe went to Taos, New Mexico and the Ghost Ranch in 1930. Characteristics of Work: She fell in love with the barrenness and expanse of the unspoiled land, and created almost mythical images of them as she loved to see them: uninterrupted and spoiled by humans. She loved the feeling of the country’s symbols: life as a struggle, sadness, and resurrection. Examples of Influences in work: She painted landscapes that showed absolutely no human influence. Lake George

O’Keefe- “Bones” Period Characteristics of Work: Bones symbolized the wild, wonderful nature of the west. Cow skulls especially showed her audience the untamed, beautiful nature of the desert west. More surreal style. Examples of Influences in work: She painted animal skulls in the works. Also, as in this case, the animal skull is floating in the air (not possible in real life, so it’s surreal). Ram's Head White Hollyhock and Little Hills

Dorothea Lange 1895 – 1965- American who was an influential documentary photographer and photojournalist She was concerned with people and their situations, appreciated the ordinary. She first photographed documentary images of Native Americans in the west in the 1920s. In 1931, she was hired by the Farm Security Administration to photograph and document the migrant farmers and workers who were forced to move between of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression.

Migrant Mother This photograph shows a Migrant mother working at a pea-pickers camp in California, living in a make-shift tent, looking longingly into the distance. This is an icon of the Great Depression.
