The Cold War Begins U.S.a. vs. U.s.s.r.

Democracy vs. Communism

The “Iron Curtain”

On June 7, 1948 , the U.S., U.K., and France announced their plan to reunite West Germany.

Rather than using military force to end the blockade, Truman organized a large airlift.

American and British planes delivered food, fuel, and other supplies to the people of West Berlin.

Member nations agreed to fight the spread of communism.

The Soviet Union responded by forming an alliance called the Warsaw Pact.

During the 1950’s the U. S. and the U. S. S. R During the 1950’s the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. continued to develop more powerful atomic bombs.

Each nation felt that having the strongest weapons was the best way to protect its people.

Some American families, fearful of an attack by the Soviets, built bomb shelters in their backyards. Bomb shelter (exterior) Bomb shelter (interior)

During school hours, students practiced air-raid drills in case of attack.

After 3 years of fighting, neither side was able to achieve victory, the war became a stalemate.

A truce was called and a demilitarized zone (DMZ), an area free of armies and fighting, was set up.
