Reading 7th February 2017 How you can help at home
What do children need to be able to read? “Dense” texts Texts with long sentences Texts that have lots of writing and not much by way of sign posts - eg – subheadings Texts with tricky words that they haven’t read before Texts on subjects that they may know very little about
Example for last year’s End of Key Stage Two assessment
Reading and understanding tricky words Decoding always has a place – sound out words until they sound like something that they have heard before Talking thesaurus – try out different words that they know that could make sense in the sentence Read not only the sentence it is in, but the ones and above and below to use the context Knowledge of words. Eg – quad (four) bike
Fluency and reading speed Links with skill in decoding first Using sentence to help guide them/ predict and refine Best thing to do - read regularly to an adult Ask them specific questions afterwards to check that they have understood it
