Gerunds and Infinitives Form and Uses

Form Gerund: you add –ing to a verb: ie. Meet > Meeting The negative – Add NOT before the –ing form. Infinitive: you add “to” before the base form of a verb: ie. Meet > To meet The negative – Add NOT before the to infinitive.

Uses: the gerund After some verbs: Suggest: I suggested going to the cinema. Recommend: We recommend eating an apple every day. Enjoy: She enjoyed singing in small pubs. Finish … (check your book for a longer list of examples)

Uses: the gerund In some expressions: It’s no good: It’s no good eating a lot of popcorn. It’s not worth: It’s not worth eating a salad when you can eat a pizza! It’s no use: It’s no use cleaning the bedroom if you make a mess again just right after that. It’s a waste of time: It’s a waste of time cleaning my room. It will be a mess again! Spend time: I spend time tidying up my bedroom. Can’t help: I can’t help singing bad.
