Warm Up Check homework. Compose 5 sentences in which you use at least one vocabulary word.

Supporting Details What are supporting details? Supporting details help the reader understand and identify the main idea. The author uses supporting details to prove the main idea. Examples of supporting details: * facts      *quotes        *opinions * statistics *anecdotes  *descriptions  * examples

Visual Features Observe the visual features of the text * charts    * maps    * headings *photos Visual features are meant to provide the reader with supporting information that reinforces/proves the main idea.

Now on to grammar… Conjunctions: What are they? Conjunctions are words that join groups of words or word groups. They are separated into two types: 1. Coordinating Conjunctions: Joins words or word groups that are used in the same way. Remember FANBOYS For And Nor But Or Yet So Example: streets and sidewalks (combining two nouns) Example: on land or at sea (combining two prepositional phrases) Example: Judy wrote down the number, but she lost it (two independent clauses) Tip: You need a comma when you combine two independent clauses with a conjunction.

Grammar cont. 2. Correlative Conjunctions: Pairs of conjunctions that join words or word groups that are used in the same way. List of Correlative Conjunctions: Both…and Not only…but also either…or neither…nor whether…or Examples: Both Jim and Roberto were outstanding athletes. (two proper nouns) We want to go not only to Orlando but also to Jacksonville. (two prepositional phrases) Either we will buy it now, or we will wait for the next sale. (two independent clauses) We should decide whether to stay or to go. (two infinitives) For my family and me, moving is both an exciting and a dangerous experience. Neither my father nor I have a sense of our limitations.

Independent Practice Read “Ferguson History Museum” on your own. Remember to annotate the article and answer the worksheet questions. Underline and label any supporting details, visual features, and the main idea.
