Name Mandala Designs

Mandalas Maṇḍala (मण्डल) is a Sanskrit word that means "circle". Sanskrit is an ancient language used in India and Asian cultures.

Mandalas have symmetry.

Radial Symmetry A symmetrical arrangement of radiating parts from a central point. Many Mandalas have radial symmetry. If you fold the piece in half, then diagonally, you will see that all sections of the circle are symmetrical stemming from the center. It’s almost like a pizza!

Project: Name Mandalas Fold your paper into a 4 square sheet. Next fold the diagonals (watch Ms. Waters). Taking one section, write your name in giant bubble letters. DO NOT PUT THE LINES TO THE LETTERS ACROSS THE TOP, BOTTOM OR EDGE OF THE PAPER. (again, watch Ms. Waters).

Continued Next you will fold your paper on a fold line so that you can trace your name onto a new section of the paper. Hold your paper to a window if it is not dark enough to see through to trace. Trace over your pencil line with a black marker. It makes it easier to trace more sections. Continue this until every section has your name in it…. Remember, DO NOT PUT LINES on the LETTERs on the TOP, Bottom or Edges of the paper.

Continued Open up your paper and see your design. Using either a complimentary or monochromatic color scheme, begin to add color to your design. Your color must be symmetrical and the same in each section.
