5E Lesson Plan First Grade Language Arts Chloe Schwartz

State Standard: 1.RF.2.3 Recognize the components of a sentence (capitalization and punctuation). 1.RF.2.2: Students are expected to build upon and confine applying concepts learned previously.

Objectives The student will be able to: Identify the use of end marks and capital letters. Acknowledge punctuation in a familiar text. Evaluate where the capitalization will go in a sentence. Evaluate which type of end mark will be at the end of the sentence. Use capital letters at beginning of sentences and final punctuation accurately. Identify the types of end marks accurately.

Engage I will show my students a song/video about sentences. After the video I will ask the class what types of end marks there are and ask the students about the capitalization they saw. https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=0Wrv_ZviMEc

Explore I will divide my class into groups of 3’s and I will give the student a card with incorrect sentences. Whoever can fix it first and raise their card up will get a point.

Explain I will have the students write their own explanation of why end marks are used at the end of sentences or why capital letters are important at the beginning of sentences. I will collect each explanation so I know if students are understanding the material.

Elaborate As a class we will discuss the use of end marks and capital letters. I will then write some sentences on the board and have the class fix each sentence together.

Evaluate I will give each student a worksheet to complete. I will give them about 15 minutes and then I will have them turn to their partner and check answers. I will go around the class to make sure every student is understanding.
