Hybrids of Science Fiction

A hybrid is something made by combining two different elements or the offspring of two different species. Hybrids are common characters in Science Fiction as well as Fantasy. In the TV show “Star Trek” Spock is the son of a human mother and a Vulcan father.

The SyFy channel has produced several movies with the title character being a dangerous hybrid creature. Dinoshark and Sharktopus are just two examples.

Dogzilla, part dog and part Godzilla, is a children’s book.

For your next assignment you will be creating your own hybrid creature For your next assignment you will be creating your own hybrid creature. In visual dictionary form, you will illustrate your creature and tell the story of how they came to be. A visual dictionary is a dictionary that primarily uses pictures to illustrate the meaning of words. In this case, you are illustrating your hybrid creature.

Step 1: Brainstorm Brainstorm on what combination of creatures you will use. You should come up with three possibilities to choose from, and then pick your favorite. Example: Dog + Godzilla = Dogzilla Man + Anaconda = Manaconda Shark + Octopus = Sharktopus

Step 2: Outlining Next, outline how your hybrid creature was created. Remember, this is Science Fiction so it MUST come back to the science. Consider the following questions: 1. Was your creature the result of science experiment gone wrong? 2. Was it the result of a crazed scientist’s research? 3. Was it an unfortunate accident?

Step 3: Tell your story In dictionary form, tell about your hybrid character. Your visual dictionary page must: Be done on 81/2 by 14 paper (given to you) 2. Have a large picture, in color, of your hybrid character Have the scientific reason for your creature Be neat

Other things you can add: Does your creature have any special features? Does your creature have any benefit to mankind? Does your creature have any enemies? If so, who are they? You might want to include a picture.

Everything in written form must have correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation and spelling. It must also be neat. My suggestion is to type all the information and glue it to your page or format your page, leaving a space to draw your pictures.

Due Date: Tuesday Dec. 6
