What are protists and fungi, and why are they important? Chapter Introduction

What are Protists? A protist is an informal term for any eukaryotic organism that is not an animal, plant or fungus. However, protists are classified as plant-like, animal-like, or fungus-like based on which group they most resemble. Protist Lesson 1

What are Protists? Protist Lesson 1

What are Protists? Protist Lesson 1

What are Protists? (cont.) Protists are eukaryotic, they have a nucleus. Most protists are unicellular, e.g. amoeba. A few protists are multicellular but have a simple structure, e.g. seaweed. Nucleus Unicellular Multicellular Lesson 1

Lesson 1

What are Protists? (cont.) What are the different types of protists? Lesson 1

Plant-like Protists Algae is a type of plant-like protist that can produce food/fuel using photosynthesis. Algae accounts for about half of all photosynthesis on earth. Algae is the foundation of aquatic ecosystems. Algae Photosynthesis Aquatic

Plant-like Protists Algae is a major component of the carbon-cycle because the earth is 70% ocean. Algae

Plant-like Protists Some algae are unicellular, such as phytoplankton. Some algae are multicellular, such as kelp.

Plantlike Protists (cont.) Some algae have a hard wall, such as diatoms. Some algae have a flagella and can move, such as dinoflagellates. Lesson 1

The Importance of Algae (cont.) How are algae beneficial to an ecosystem? Lesson 1

Animal-like Protists Protozoans are protists that resemble tiny animals. Protozoans eat food because they do not have chloroplasts to make their own food. Protozoans are unicellular and mostly live in wet environments. Protozoans Lesson 1

Animal-like Protists (cont.) A paramecium is a protist with cilia. A paramecium gets its food by forcing water into a groove in its side. Paramecium Cilia Lesson 1

Animal-like Protists (cont.) An amoeba is a protist with a with pseudopod which it can move and hunt for food. Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by parasitic protozoan Plasmodium. Amoeba Pseudopod Malaria Plasmodium Lesson 1

The Importance of Protozoans In what ways are protists helpful and harmful to humans? Lesson 1

Fungus-like Protists Slime mold and water mold are fungus-like protists that share many characteristics with fungi. Most slime molds and water molds absorb nutrients from their environment like dead plants or animals. slime molds water molds Lesson 1

Importance of Funguslike Protists (cont.) How are funguslike protists beneficial to an environment? Lesson 1

Protists are a diverse group of organisms that cannot be classified as plants, animals, or fungi. Protists are grouped according to the type of organisms they most resemble. Diatoms are one type of plantlike protist. Lesson 1

Some protists use hairlike structures called cilia to move. Lesson 1

What is a type of protozoan with one or more flagella called? A. ciliate B. protozoan C. flagellate D. paramecium Lesson 1

An amoeba is a common form of which type of protist? A. sarcodine B. pseudopod C. flagellate D. protozoan Lesson 1

What is a protist with cilia and two types of nuclei called? A. paramecium B. protozoan C. sarcodine D. pseudopod Lesson 1
