Predicting Products Decide what type of reaction it is based on what the reactants given. Figure out what will happen to the reactants (how they will react)

TIP: Remember the exceptions TIP: Remember the exceptions! See “Types of Reactions” Notes from the very beginning of this unit.

Combination/Synthesis A + B  AB Probable Product: A single compound Mg + O2 

Decomposition AB  A + B Probable Product: More than 1 compound and/or element Ca(OH)2 

Single Replacement A + BC  AC + B Probable Product: A single element and new compound Use activity series to determine if a reaction will happen! Cu + AgNO3

Double Replacement AB + CD  AD + CB Probable Product: Two new compounds Use solubility rules to determine which product is the precipitate and (if any) which are spectators

Precipitate Predictions Use the solubility chart to determine if any of the products will be insoluble (ppt) from the aqueous reactants Pb(NO3)2 + H2SO4  Na3PO4 + AlCl3 

Combustion CxHy + O2  CO2 + H2O Probable products (if reactant is a hydrocarbon): CO2 & H2O

Practice K2O + H2O  K2CO3 + BaCl2  NaCl + F2  C3H8 + O2 
