Teacher Notes A - Number 12 pupils to act this scenario out (standing in a circle). Get each student to hold a whiteboard with their number displayed on it. B – If possible number 14 pupils to act this scenario out, otherwise use 14 whiteboards. Get each student to hold a whiteboard with their number displayed on it. C and D – Draw this scenario on the whiteboard and cross off the numbers.

A Last Person Standing Who is the last person left standing? Twelve people (numbered 1 – 12) are standing in a circle. The first person sits down and then so does every second person until there is only one person left standing. (ie: 1 sits, then 3, then 5 and so on) Who is the last person left standing?

B Last Person Standing Who is the last person left standing? Fourteen people (numbered 1 – 14) are standing in a circle. The first person sits down and then so does every second person until there is only one person left standing. (ie: 1 sits, then 3, then 5 and so on) Who is the last person left standing?

Can you spot any patterns? Last Person Standing C Can you spot any patterns? Can you predict the number of the last person standing if you followed the same process with 16 pupils in a circle?

D Last Person Standing Who is the last person left standing? Twenty people (numbered 1 – 20) are standing in a circle. The first person sits down and then so does every second person until there is only one person left standing. (ie: 1 sits, then 3, then 5 and so on) Who is the last person left standing?

What would happen if there were Last Person Standing Extension What would happen if there were 30 people standing? 90 people standing? An odd number of people?

Answers B – For 14 pupils, 12 is the last person standing A – For 12 pupils, 8 is the last person standing B – For 14 pupils, 12 is the last person standing C – For 16 pupils, 16 is the last person standing D – For 20 pupils, 4 is the last person standing
