Barriers Money Time Staff resistance, support Volunteers: “We don’t need any” Not sure how to recognize volunteers Informal vs Formal Recognition for short term volunteers challenging ? What other barriers

Remember: You’re there to recognize Volunteers “give them VIP treatment” Your presentation is well organized Accurately pronounce names, and are in the audience Have someone taking pictures, and lots of them Deliver invitations in advance, encourage them to bring someone Vary the program from year to year to add interest Spotlight your organizations mission and vision A Committee to help you organize the event

Hitting the Mark Retention And Motivation

KNOW YOUR VOLUNTEERS

Retention Begins in the interview process: Understanding your volunteer’s main reason for Volunteering and Honor this through out his/her time with you

KEY COMPONETS Placement Orientation Resources Training Evaluations Supervision Orientation Resources Training Evaluations Team Player Confident

PEOPLE OFTEN SAY THAT MOTOVATION DOESN’T LAST. WELL NEITHER DOES BATHING-THATS WHY WE RECOMMEND IT DAILY Zig Ziglar

Motivation Connection Positive Feedback, “Often”, Praise them Good Communication: Email, Text, Phone calls, keeping them informed of any changes in their patient: death, Respite care, revoked Hospice. Acknowledge when you receive their notes Regular meetings, same day, time each month, providing continuous education, share time Follow up meetings with a re-cap, and reminder of up coming events. Invite to IDT meetings Respond to their request in a timely manor Make sure the know they are a Valuable member of the Hospice Team Send hand written notes, Birthday cards

Recognition Reminders Best Time to recognize your volunteers is: daily, weekly, monthly, yearly! Organization barriers to giving positive feed back are: time, competition among volunteers for recognition. Be cautious about formal recognition which include: Thinking you can replace daily “Thank You” Lack of personal Acknowledgement Can be more costly, Some volunteers may object Basic strategies for recognizing volunteers are Awards and Rewards

What Motivates You! Flexibility Creativity Recognition Responsibility/Trust Value

You are Important! I You
