That We Might Not Desire Evil 1 Corinthians 10:1-11

(24) Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. Galatians 3:24 NASB

(1) For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, (2) and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, (3) and all ate the same spiritual food, 1 Corinthians 10:1-11 ESV

(4) and all drank the same spiritual drink (4) and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. (5) Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. (6) Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. 1 Corinthians 10:1-11 ESV

(7) Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play." (8) We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. (9) We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, (10) nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. 1 Corinthians 10:1-11 ESV

(11) Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. 1 Corinthians 10:1-11 ESV

(7) Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play." 1 Corinthians 10:7 ESV

(4) And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf. And they said, "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!" (5) When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, "Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD." (6) And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play. Exodus 32:4-8, 17, 19-20 ESV

(7) And the LORD said to Moses, "Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. (8) They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them. They have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it and said, 'These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!'“ ... (19) And as soon as he came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses' anger burned hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. (20) He took the calf that they had made and burned it with fire and ground it to powder and scattered it on the water and made the people of Israel drink it. Exodus 32:4-8, 17, 19-20 ESV

(8) We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty- three thousand fell in a single day. 1 Corinthians 10:8 ESV

(1) While Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab. (2) These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. (3) So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel. Numbers 25:1-9 ESV

(4) And the LORD said to Moses, "Take all the chiefs of the people and hang them in the sun before the LORD, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel." (5) And Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Each of you kill those of his men who have yoked themselves to Baal of Peor." Numbers 25:1-9 ESV

(6) And behold, one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the people of Israel, while they were weeping in the entrance of the tent of meeting. (7) When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand Numbers 25:1-9 ESV

(8) and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped. (9) Nevertheless, those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand. Numbers 25:1-9 ESV

(17) "Harass the Midianites and strike them down, (18) for they have harassed you with their wiles, with which they beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the chief of Midian, their sister, who was killed on the day of the plague on account of Peor." Numbers 25:17-18 ESV

(13) Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the chiefs of the congregation went to meet them outside the camp. (14) And Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, who had come from service in the war. Numbers 31:13-16 ESV

(15) Moses said to them, "Have you let all the women live (15) Moses said to them, "Have you let all the women live? (16) Behold, these, on Balaam's advice, caused the people of Israel to act treacherously against the LORD in the incident of Peor, and so the plague came among the congregation of the LORD. (4) From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. (5) And the people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food." (6) Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. Numbers 21:4-9 ESV

(7) And the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people. (8) And the LORD said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live." (9) So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live. Numbers 21:4-9 ESV

(7) And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the LORD by saying, "Is the LORD among us or not? - Exodus 17:7 ESV (22) none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice, - Numbers 14:22 ESV (16) "You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah. - Deuteronomy 6:16 ESV

(41) But on the next day all the congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and against Aaron, saying, "You have killed the people of the LORD." (42) And when the congregation had assembled against Moses and against Aaron, they turned toward the tent of meeting. And behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared. (43) And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting, Numbers 16:41-50 ESV

(44) and the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, (45) "Get away from the midst of this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment." And they fell on their faces. (46) And Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer, and put fire on it from off the altar and lay incense on it and carry it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone out from the LORD; the plague has begun." Numbers 16:41-50 ESV

(47) So Aaron took it as Moses said and ran into the midst of the assembly. And behold, the plague had already begun among the people. And he put on the incense and made atonement for the people. (48) And he stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stopped. (49) Now those who died in the plague were 14,700, besides those who died in the affair of Korah. Numbers 16:41-50 ESV

(50) And Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, when the plague was stopped. Numbers 16:41-50 ESV
