GOAL AusVELS LevelS 5&6: Measurement- Length and Area l recognise that some units of measurement are better suited for some tasks than others.

New Information We measure very large areas, like the area of a city or a country in square kilometres (km²). We measure large areas, such as the area of a park, in hectares. Hectares can be written as ha. A square with sides of 100m has an area of 1ha. 1ha = 10 000m²
New Information Finding Areas on Maps (You’ll need to place the Copy of map from Frameworks 6, pg 325, into your books.) In order to find the length of the Parkes area on the map to the nearest m²: The length of the rectangle is 20mm. The width of the rectangle is 12mm The scale is given as 1:25 000 This means each 1mm on the map is 25 000mm or 25mm in real life Real length = 20 x 25 000 = 500 000mm = 500m Real width = 12 x 25 000 = 530 000mm = 300m Area of the rectangle = Length x Width = 500 x 300m = 150 000m²
Application (practice) In Interactive Notebook Year 5s and 6s: Frameworks 5 (pg 290) – Activity 6 (parts 1 - 7) In Grid book Place copy of map from Frameworks 6 (pg 325) – Activities 9 into book and find the areas of the areas A, B, C and D. Give your answers in m²
