Presentation transcript:

Revise key terms and concepts related to representation. Representation Recap Learning Objective: Revise key terms and concepts related to representation. Timed Practice.

Section B: Contemporary Media Issues Section B of the Critical Perspectives exam is based on the set topic, Media and Collective Identity. We will be studying a range of texts, theories and debates whilst focussing on several in class case studies. You will also be asked to conduct some individual research on your own case studies.

Areas of study The exam board ask each student to consider a set of prompt questions for each topic, which they will be expected to respond to in the exam. For the Media and Collective Identity topic these are the questions: How do contemporary media represent collective nations/regions in different ways? How do contemporary representations compare to previous time periods? What are the social implications of different representations? To what extent is human identity increasingly ‘mediated’? We will be working our way through these questions over the term.

Representation What is meant by representation? In the media representations are often thought of as ‘re-presentations’ of a particular social group. They are seen by some media theorists as ‘social constructions’, presented to us by the media as the truth! During A2 Media we will hope to gain a deeper understanding of representational issues and the ‘fluidity of representation’.

Basic application of representation. Watch the opening of ‘Mean Girls’ and consider the representation of the following demographic factors: Age Gender Ethnicity Class Sexuality Consider some of the key terms from the test and make notes. Task: from your notes you will 30 minutes to answer the following question: How is the issue of representation approached in the opening to ‘Mean Girls’?
