TO WHAT EXTENT DO PARADIGM SHIFTS INFLUENCE SOCIAL CHANGE? Environmental Values -- Part 1

Review Question - # 1 Standardized IQ tests are thought to be an unfair measure of an individual’s natural intelligence. Discuss why anti-racist educators would want to change this test. How do these tests fail to reduce prejudice and eliminate institutional barriers to achieve equality between different groups of people?

TO WHAT EXTENT DO PARADIGM SHIFTS INFLUENCE SOCIAL CHANGE? Environmental Values -- Part 2

Case Study: In the summer of 2001, President George W. Bush (USA) wanted to obtain natural gas supplies from Alaska and the Northwest Territories. This project would require the construction of above-ground pipelines through the Northwest Territories and Alberta. The country needed the natural resources that could be gained from this project. However, there were others who believed that the pipelines would interfere with caribou migration and create great potential for environmental disaster. As a result, they were readily opposed to the idea. OUTCOME = PIPELINES WERE NOT CONSTRUCTED

Case Study: Questions Identify the two paradigms used by the individuals/groups in this case study. Use specific evidence from the case to support your answer. How can our environmental values influence social change? Use the case to help support your answer. Explain whether George W. Bush is an example of a modernizing elite.

Revisiting Global Warming http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_s9dxc_jVlY&fe ature=related In your notebooks What are some possible solutions offered in the video?

My Daily Life (things I do, products I buy and use, what I watch and read, things I eat) Products Dominant Paradigm Greenwash Environmental/ Alternative Paradigm Paper Towels Ex. Coal Makes money for the company. Largest contributor of mercury pollution  harmful to humans, fish and wildlife Coal that releases less carbon dioxide emissions  therefore, it is “clean coal” Use sustainable energy like solar energy

What is Greenwashing? The act of making a product seem more green than it is, often by false claims or mistruths, in order to get people to buy it (and thus the company makes money). Example  “Clean Coal”

Case Study: “Clean Coal” A Southern company in America, known for its high carbon dioxide emission rates, has been promoting this idea of “clean coal” as a potential clean energy solution. The underlying message sent to consumers: it is smart to use coal to power the country because the US has a 200-year supply of coal. http://www.stopgreenwash.org/coal
