Writing to Review

Techniques you are likely to find in a successful review Language Devices Sentence and punctuation Layout devices

Language Devices Sentence and punctuation Layout devices Alliteration, puns, humour in title Use of short sentence to make a point emphatic or to show humour or sarcasm. Interesting quotes in a different colour in the middle of the article Use of imperatives to persuade / encourage the reader to adopt your view Use of parentheses to add a humorous aside Boxes and lines to separate different sections of information Use of imagery (similes and metaphors) to create vivid pictures and to add humour Balance of facts and opinion to support pov and opinion for interest Rhetorical questions and use of second person / first person plural to engage the reader and encourage them to read rest of article Use of pictures and symbols to add visual interest Use of connectives for contrast, addition and summary Bright colours and bold fonts for titles, subtitles, quotes and key information Technical language to describe specialist aspects of product, book and film. Balance of formal language to impress reader and informal language to engage with the reader.

Use adjectives, adverbs, similes and humour to add interest to your review The sleek engine achieves an impressive 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds. Where are the adjectives and what do they tell us about the author’s opinion? The compact camera can fit snugly into your back pocket. Using adjectives to show a negative opinion , write a sentence each about a camera and a car.

Similes – original, exaggerated and amusing This vehicle could only be considered fast if you were comparing it with the movement of a slug who had gorged himself on a flowerbed of lettuce. Use a simile in a positive way to describe the movement of a car.

Adverbs – Used to show opinion, add structure and vary the openings of your sentences Disappointingly, it takes two to three hours to charge. Unfortunately for all of you who have a life, it takes two to three hours to charge. The headphones are thoughtfully covered with fine cotton to protect your ears. Use positive adverbs to describe something that a company has created for a mobile phone.
