What I Wish I Knew In First Year (WIWIK 1) Marcus Choo Thomas Sun Jubilent Amalendran

Our Personal Experiences Marcus – Meet a lot of new, different friends, exploring London was amazing, dissection; the human values lessons and HIEBM; not too much stress Thomas – societies; helps reduce stress Jubilent - trying out lots of different things; lots of experiences What were the best parts, worst parts, stress? Etc anything

Structure of Year 1 Four blocks: 1) Foundations of Biomedical Sciences 1         FBS1 (FAE, CBSS, CGCC, NAM, PPP) 2) Foundations of Biomedical Sciences 2         FBS2 (AOS, PPoS, IAI) 3) Genes, Behaviour and Environment         GBE (H&N, NBSS, HIEBM, EAB, Genomics) 4) Doctor and Society and Introduction to Clinical Skills          DASICS Anatomy, physiology, generally what they’ll have learned by the end of the year Timeline? FBS1 before christmas, FBS2 and GBE after christmas? Can’t remember

FBS1 FAE - anatomy of the abdomen, perineum, some endocrinology, UNDERSTAND HOW NERVES WORK PPP - heart anatomy and physiology, GPCRs ARE SUPER IMPORTANT; one whole week for liver and one for GI tract, much more chemistry. My advice is to learn from first principles, so that you understand everything going forwards. Don’t just try to keep up with lectures. NAM is a lot of biochemistry but also interesting diseases, so there is some practical application Not much practical application or diseases but KEEP AT IT!

FBS2 Is IAI still online for them? AOS - back, ALL ABOUT THE heart and lungs PPoS - heart and lung physiology; the first bit of practical knowledge they’ll get. Like how to treat altitude sickness, different kinds of respiratory disease

GBE HIEBM HIEBM HIEBM My personal favourite

DASICS Opinions? Clinical skills (in prep for OSCEs) Philosophy module Humanities module Portfolio entries and online learning activities Some people think this isn’t important. If you fail your portfolio you can’t even sit your exams so everything you learn this year, including DASICs, has a purpose to it.

How to Study Merits Pass mark Textbooks? Buy? Gray’s Anatomy for Students Vander’s Physiology Despo’s Molecular Biology How well do you want to do? 50% 70% 80% 99% This year is formative, get an idea of how you study in the first few weeks, the first exam will give you an idea. Don’t forget everything you learn will be to save someone's life not for an exam. 70% learn everything 5-6 weeks before 80% look at slides before the actual lecture 99% rock person – you’ve hacked the system

How to Study Jubilent: Link concepts together; mindmaps Synap quizzes; create your own and share with friends Group revision Marcus: Went to all the lectures Translated into notes afterwards Referred to lecture capture if needed MERIT Don’t memorise, try to understand why things happen and build on first principles Anatomy’s importance was slightly reduced for us; a lot of physiology was tested, but may not be the same for you guys Wasay: Quizzlet helps! Using flashcards helps you remember more Regularly re-watching lectures

Time Management, Social Life Don’t let lectures pile up Enjoy yourself. Remember why you are here so prioritise work. Don’t skip lectures. Dissections, dissections, dissections. Clubs and Societies Wednesday Guy’s Bar is infamous. (Take that as you will) Make friends who are in other courses&campuses Explore the area and London in general!

International Students Quick advice from the older internationals! “Inform your embassy if you are in trouble” “Make friends who aren’t just from your own country” “When I missed home Pakistani Society felt great, join not just your own country’s Society!! ” “Everything is new, enjoy what London has to offer” “Don’t ever lose your BRP” “We are all happy to help so speak to us”
