SRS for tramway and busses Nicolae Dragu 12/10/2016

Origins of SRS A new solution based on a successful technology Derived from APS, service-proven over 12 years More than 350 trams sold with APS on-board 144 km of tracks sold equipped with APS rail Over 18 million km run First APS project in service: Bordeaux 2003 Latest APS project in service: Dubai 2014

What is SRS? Description A ground-based static charging system for trams & electric buses equipped with on-board energy storage On-board: current collectors under the vehicle Trackside: cabinet installed at passenger stops Ground: street-level conductor rail (or pads) at passenger stations

What is SRS? Description In-station cabinet controls and feeds the street-level power rails Compact for easy integration into tram/bus stop shelter Front view Top view

What is SRS? Operating stages The power rail continuously emits a coded signal and allows the vehicle to position itself The vehicle detects the ascending signal from the rail and stops over it

What is SRS? Operating stages The collector shoe is then automatically lowered

What is SRS? Operating stages The vehicle sends a coded signal enabling the energisation of the rail The battery/supercapacitor recharge begins Energisation of the SRS rail = APS functional and safety principles proven over 12 years of operation and validated by 5 certification bodies

What is SRS? Operating stages The charging current is then interrupted The signal from the vehicle to the ground is stopped

What is SRS? Operating stages The rail is un-powered and the collector shoe is raised before the tram moves off

What is SRS? Description In-station cabinet controls and feeds the street-level power pads Compact for easy integration into bus stop shelter Front view Top view

What is SRS? Operating stages Power pads continuously emit a radio coded signal and allow the vehicle to position itself Vehicle detects the ascending signal from the pads and stops over it

What is SRS? Operating stages The collector shoe is then automatically lowered

What is SRS? Operating stages The vehicle sends a radio coded signal enabling the energisation of the rail The battery/supercapacitor recharge begins Energisation of the SRS rail = APS functional and safety principles proven over 12 years of operation and validated by 5 certification bodies

What is SRS? Operating stages The charging current is then interrupted The signal from the vehicle to the ground is stopped

What is SRS? Key features Based on APS principle: same components for both location control and energization (with bi-directional communication) Power rails contain conductive segments and antennae Collector shoe contains contact power strips and antennae Cabinet contains power contactors and emitter/receiver of the signals SRS is an all-in-one system: no need for extra signalling or vehicle detection devices Differentiator: control and energisation within the same equipment

What is SRS? Key features The power required depends on the type of application: An on-board supercapacitor to charge in less than 20 seconds at passenger stations or An on-board battery to charge during several minutes at each terminus of a bus line SRS for tram: designed for 1500 A / 750 V during 20 seconds

Customer benefits Ground-based solution vs. overhead charging solutions Easy urban insertion with compact solution No height constraints on vehicles By contact vs. inductive charging solutions Fast and efficient energy transfer Lower vehicle and infrastructure cost/complexity Proven, safe and reliable technology Derived from Alstom’s APS solution
