Regions and Tourism Chapter 2

Regions 1. Regions are locations that have similar characteristics; these characteristics can be physical, human, or both.

Types of Regions Micro-Regions Macro-Regions Local areas based on similar characteristics (Suburbs, downtown Ottawa etc.) Boundaries may overlap Macro-Regions Large regions, defined by a set of characteristics (Ecozones, countries, tropics)

Types of Regions cont’d… Homogeneous Regions Characterized by a common characteristic throughout the entire region. Ex. A subdivision is classified by similar housing styles, or climate regions defined by similar temperatures. Functional Regions Area that is defined by a specific activity or function Can be big or small These activities can be economic, political, or cultural. Ex. Industrial park defined by the common activity of manufacturing (economic), areas under provincial or national governments (political)

Purpose of using Regions to Study T & T 2. The purpose of studying regions would be to distinguish between different regions and the characteristics in which they have to offer. 3. Studying regions are useful because it can help you make informed decisions and judgements about two different areas. Help you decide where you would like or not like to travel.
