PA. State Trooper

Nature of the Work Maintaining regular preventative patrols and assisting motorists and other members of the public. Conducting criminal and non-criminal investigations. Assisting in the regulation of traffic and enforcing vehicle and traffic laws. Maintaining public order and responding to emergencies, civil disorders and disasters. Pursuing suspects and effecting arrests.

Education and Training Specific educational requirements for state police vary by state. State police generally must possess a high school diploma, and an associates degree or 60 semester credit hours from an accredited institution of higher learning at time of application. Must usually be a state resident, have a valid drivers license and be a U.S. citizen. Police are also required to pass an oral test, and under go a medical examination, drug test and psychological evaluation. They must also complete training at the State Police Academy.

Job Outlook The Job outlook is predicted to grow from 2010-2020 by seven percent. The predicted number of jobs in 2020 is about 850,000.
