Where are some places that we see law in everyday life?

Rule of Law A principle of justice stting that the law is necessary to regulate society, that law applies equally to everyone, and that people are not governed by arbitrary power.

Rule of Law: A Three Part Principle of Justice - Individuals must recognize and accept the law as necessary to regulate society. - The law applies equally to everyone including to people of power (senate scandal) - No one in our society has the authority to exercise unrestricted power to take away our rights except in accordance with the law.

What do you think the speaker meant? “Law is simply the rule of the stronger” – Plato, Greek philosopher “Law depends on its validity by having a penalty attached” – Jane Austen, British author “An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.” – Martin Luther King Jr., Civil rights leader “At his best, man is the noblest of all animals; separated from law and justice he is the worst.” – Aristotle, Greek philosopher

Activity Compose a statement of your own that would represent your view of the law Write your statement on a piece of paper, do not sign your name. I will collect each statement and we will read them together as a class.

Activity Come up with a new law that does not exist. Or choose an existing law that you already know. Example: $10,000 fine for cell phone ringing in a movie theatre. Write two arguments for and against the passage of the law.
