Learning Intentions  I can describe the role of the kidneys.  I understand and can describe the process of filtration and reabsorption in the nephron.
Intro to Excretion. Excretion  Excretion –Release and removal of metabolic wastes  Metabolic Wastes  Excess water  Salts  Carbon Dioxide  Nitrogenous.
Excretory. Function Remove metabolic waste from the blood- Excretion Regulate H2O in blood Organs of excretion- Skin-water, salts and urea Lungs-CO2 Kidneys.

The Urinary System T

I. The urinary system A. Function 1.Eliminates liquid wastes from the blood 2. Maintaining stable fluid, salt & pH balances within the blood

II. Urinary system structures. Kidneys: contain nephrons which are the filtering units that clean the blood. Ureters: tubes from kidney to bladder Bladder: storage of liquid waste called urine. Urethra: vessel from bladder to outside body.

III. The cleansing process 1. Blood, carrying wastes, enters the kidneys. a. Enters via renal artery 2. filtered by nephrons. a. filtered materials are called filtrate. b. blood leaves kidney through renal vein.

Don’t write. The cleansing process 3. In lower portion of nephron, the filtrate is refined down to urine. 4. Nephrons drop urine into a collecting duct. 5. Collecting duct directs urine into the renal pelvis and then to the ureter. 6. Ureter guides urine down to the bladder to await elimination. 7. When it is time for you to urinate, bladder releases urine through urethra and urethra leads urine out of the body.

III. Urine making process viewed linearly….. Blood > kidneys > nephron > filtrate > urine> collecting duct > ureter > bladder > urethra > toilet
