L2L The Professional Development Framework through the lens of Libraries & Librarians

What Are We? Collaboration of three academic Libraries Proposal to the National Forum on exploring the PDF through the lens of Librarians & Libraries Evaluated and awarded funding for a 2 year project L2L We represent three Institute of Technology Libraries, each bringing a team with diverse backgrounds and experiences Dundalk IT (lead) DIT IT Carlow

The Project as Proposed To use the PDF as Librarians and recommend/discover/assist Librarians to use the PDF To look at the Framework in Triads To look at ways to provide motivation and reward by accrediting & acknowledging engagement To ensure sustainability by looking at cultures as created in procedures, policies etc To facilitate sustainable Communities of Practice

Vision We want to embed and champion a PDF that addresses the complex nature of all our work and sustains ongoing learning so that we may better serve our students, our institutions and our practice as Librarians.

Aims Further the trans-disciplinary dialogue between LIS and Pedagogy Explore, unpack and establish the role of teaching in libraries Engage with a PDF that has been researched & represents best practice Create tools that help Librarians engage with the PDF Propose changes to the PDF so that it works better for Libraries Accreditation of PDF Sustainability

Motivations Evolution of T & L HE Trends Complicated & complex Align with a researched & evolved PDF Re-position our Libraries Sustainable PDF approach Assurances for those who work & engage with us

The PDF Core practices of value awareness Reflection as practice Domains Formal & Informal

Disciplinary Context of PDF Initial scan to benchmark PDF against Library PD approaches UK context Comparison with LAI/CILIP Framework Trend towards broader, wider, conceptual, contextual approaches (ACRL) Reflection as an emerging topic

Strands of L2L The PDF through the lens of Librarians Acknowledgement & Accreditation Sustainability Organisational Issues

L2L:Where Are We? The Professional Development Framework through the lens of Libraries & Librarians

So Far Analysed the PDF Ambassadors Inter-institutional Triads Plans & interventions Structures to support us Student Voice Communication & Gathering Information

L2L Challenges We hope that through our work on this project, we will forge connections to foster increased collaboration between us and further provide a model upon which these collaborations can be sustained

Learnings That the PDF can work That it may need additions & interpretations Uncovering the conscious & unconscious construction of our work as Librarians Impacting on us & inspiring us Sense that this process is helping us, a way to voice things that have been there for a long time, share, and acknowledge what we do

Learnings New Practices Values Peer Work Reflection Philosophy

Learnings Language “Librarians” Our Institutions, Money, Admin Peer Support Helps Learning About Each Other Helps Diversity is Helpful PDF helps PDF inevitably makes us look at practice & that can be uncomfortable Communication & Gathering infomation

L2L: What’s Emerging The Professional Development Framework through the lens of Libraries & Librarians

PD PD has not gotten a lot of attention. Focusing on our development is a practice. We are typically shy about confronting personal qualities in our work which can make engaging with the Domains challenging We are used to more mechanical models of development rather than the holistic model offered by the Framework

Words & Language Language of the PDF Our Identity Teachers? How is our understanding constructed?

Student Voice “As a current student I feel that we can contribute to the L2L project by providing insight into the needs of students and as to how these either are or are not being met by the teacher librarians in our college.”

L2L: Future The Professional Development Framework through the lens of Libraries & Librarians

Opportunity To take the PDF and apply it. The Framework is encouraging us all to think differently and to move to more reflective processes There is lots of enthusiasm within and outside our libraries Opportunities for library staff to collaborate and strategise, thereby creating exciting opportunities and future potential To position our Libraries And to align with wider Institutional, national and international contexts

Institutionally PD an inherent part of all Institutional Strategies Opportunity for L2L to influence PD of Librarians Build L2L into our Departmental Stratrgies Aware of other PD related projects within organisation which will be addressing similar issues

Sustainability Institutional alignmewnt with the PDF Policy, Procedures & Cultures Scholarship PDF with interpretations & guides Triads Accreditation & Accreditation that has a currency

L2L: Why We Organised Today? The Professional Development Framework through the lens of Libraries & Librarians

Widening the Conversation Conversation and awareness about PD and the PDF Policy, Procedures & Cultures Widening Engagement with the PDF Within the L2L Libraries & Beyond

Thank You
