Safety in the Rainy Season You must be careful when it rains. When roads get wet, they become slippery and vehicles take longer to stop. Be particularly careful on slippery surfaces. Apply brakes with care to avoid skidding.

After crossing the water logged area, pump brakes frequently to dry the brake drum and shoes, so that the braking ability is fully restored. Avoid moving off the carriage way, as road edges are not visible in water-logged areas, a vehicle may fall in deep water.

Driving through flooded areas Be extraordinarily cautious on city streets, as there may be open or damaged manholes on the carriage way. Be considerate to pedestrians (especially children, old and infirm) and do not splash water on them. Never attempt crossing submerged bridge or culvert. In hilly areas, nullahs (drains) can be very dangerous, for even a waterless nullah may suddenly get flooded as a result of a landslide or heavy rain in the catchment area. Be very cautious.

Check the vehicle and tyres regularly. Smooth tyres on a wet road lose their grip completely. Pool cars with colleagues/friends. It not only reduces traffic congestion but also relieves individual of continuous hazardous driving and the vehicle gets a much needed break. When conditions become extreme, remember the best driving is not to drive at all.
