Presentation transcript:

Safety in the Rainy Season You must be careful when it rains. When roads get wet, they become slippery and vehicles take longer to stop. Be particularly careful on slippery surfaces. Apply brakes with care to avoid skidding.

Driving in rain Windscreen should be clean to give maximum visibility. Use both the wipers Drive at low speeds Use head lights Where rain continues for several days, it is advisable to allow the vehicle to properly dry and check its innermost parts for water logging.

Driving through flooded areas While passing through an area where water logging is heavy, take the following steps : Change into lower gear well in advance. Control speed with your clutch and keep the accelerator pressed to prevent water from entering the exhaust pipe. If water enters, the engine will shut off. Never change gears in deep water. After crossing the water logged area, pump brakes frequently to dry the brake drum and shoes, so that the braking ability is fully restored. Avoid moving off the carriage way, as road edges are not visible in water-logged areas, a vehicle may fall in deep water.

Driving through flooded areas Be extraordinarily cautious on city streets, as there may be open or damaged manholes on the carriage way. Be considerate to pedestrians (especially children, old and infirm) and do not splash water on them. Never attempt crossing submerged bridge or culvert. In hilly areas, nullahs (drains) can be very dangerous, for even a waterless nullah may suddenly get flooded as a result of a landslide or heavy rain in the catchment area. Be very cautious.

Driving through flooded areas caution never enter a water logged area unless a vehicle has safely crossed ahead, or, it can be ascertained that the area ahead is shallow enough. Never venture to drive through water when it flows above the stone guard or above the tyre center line

Safe monsoon driving Once the rains come down, the rise of accidents go up. During monsoon period every driver is facing the same hazards, but everybody may not be as careful as a defensive driver. Road discipline I. Be alert. The rain changes road conditions from stretch to stretch. II. Look out for pedestrians. Most of them tend to concentrate more on protecting themselves from the rain than from dangers on the road. III. Cyclist and handcart pullers get blinded by the rain. Watch out for them. IV. Unexpected pot holes can not only damage the vehicle but also send it out of control.

I. Make sure the wiper blades are not old or cracked. Safe monsoon driving Low visibility When visibility is low, concentration of the driver must be extra high. I. Make sure the wiper blades are not old or cracked. II. Use the headlights even during the day. III. Be extra cautious while reversing. Reduce speed More time is needed To see To be seen To react To stop The braking distance increases on wet road. Therefore keep double the normal distance from the vehicle ahead.

Safe monsoon driving Avoid skidding Skids do not happen. They are made. Every time the speed is increased, and braking or steering is done. You can go into a skid. I.Look out for polished road surfaces or slippery foreign materials on roads e.g. Leaves, mud, oil film. Be careful immediately after a drizzle. II. Do not brake suddenly while cornering. III. Reduce the speed much before the corner. IV.Worn out tyres can cause dangerous skids.Replace them .

Safe monsoon driving Driving fast through pools of water can harm the brakes and spread water under the bonnet which can stop the engine. Test the brakes after driving through water. Check the vehicle and tyres regularly. Smooth tyres on a wet road lose their grip completely. Pool cars with colleagues/friends. It not only reduces traffic congestion but also relieves individual of continuous hazardous driving and the vehicle gets a much needed break. When conditions become extreme, remember the best driving is not to drive at all.

Safe monsoon driving Always disengage the central locking system of your car when driving in rain as short circuit can make it defunct and in case of emergency car doors can’t be opened and power windows cant be rolled down.

Thank you very much for patiently going through this presentation Safe monsoon driving Never turn on the Air Conditioning while stuck in a jam and in water logged area as Carbon Monoxide and other toxic gases from exhaust enter the cabin through AC and may prove fatal for the occupants. Thank you very much for patiently going through this presentation
