Ana, Anahita, Margo & Nori The Role of theater Ana, Anahita, Margo & Nori

Theatre in Shakespeare's Time It was public You could go there for entertainment, the news, socialize with people Going to the Theatre was like going on technology: social media, the internet etc. They would say what is happening in England – that's where you get the news. Go for entertainment – where you go instead of youtube or tv Actually going and talking to people – socializing

The Role of Theater in the Past Medieval Era No theaters were allowed due to the plague(diseases) Minstrels – Traveling performers kept theater alive Puppeteers, Jugglers, Story tellers 600 B.C. First record of European Theater in ancient Greece Festival of Dionysus (God of Wine and Fertility) Religion & Tragedy were popular themes Women weren't allowed to preform 300 B.C. Romans were inspired by Greek theater Actors were slaves More comedies than tragedies Women allowed to preform with small roles

The Role of theatre in the present day (2016) Many plays are now remixed (modern day aspects/presentation with an old play or vice versa) Now-a-days musicals are important pieces of theatre. Instead of speaking it, the actors are continuously singing and dancing The place it is set out if very different, now a days you can go to a fancy/proper place to watch it. Since sexism is no longer a huge problem women are allowed to play the roles meant for them instead of having all men plays. Anyone is allowed to attend the theatre to watch pieces/play a role in the theatre. Not that many people attend the theatre because due to technology people can go to the movies or watch things online(e.g. youtube) Variation of authors and playwrites.

Theater Then vs. Theater Now Nowadays you must reserve and buy your tickets well in advance. Most importantly, going to today’s theatre is considered an elitist activity. The duration of a play's run is longer Going to theater nowadays Isn't nearly as impulsive Authors wrote plays for the masses, especially those who couldn’t read or write. Going to theater in Shakespeare's times was a populist activity Authorities didn’t like it and didn’t allow acting in the city itself. They thought it had a bad influence on people and kept them from going to church. As time went on more and more popular theatres emerged outside city walls. This was considered an unsafe area with crime and prostitution. Shakespeare’s theatre was full of life. People did not sit all the time and it was not quiet during the performance. The audience could walk around, eat and drink during the play. They cheered, booed and sometimes even threw objects at the actors.
