Personal Preference How I partition is with using an ext4 filesystem I prefer Mandriva Powerpack 2010 personally with a GNOME GUI environment Some applications I like include: -OpenOffice, Thunderbird -Banshee, Totem, Audacity, GIMP, Picasa -Vuze -Battle of Wesnoth, Uplink, Tux Racer -NTFS, MonoDevelop, MySQL, Eclipse, Xarchive

Partitioning for Linux Some distributions will allow for installing on NTFS filesystems, so if your planning on dual-booting Windows and Linux, I would recommend keeping with partitioning with this type of filesystem If your looking to switch to Linux fully or just use Linux on that particular computer, I would recommend partitioning that particular drive with the (newer) ext4 filesystem, or if you feel safer using the ext3 filesystem

Benefits to Using the ext4 Filesystem Backwards compatible with previous filesystems Can support disk sizes of up to 1 Exbibyte Can check filesystem more quickly than other filesystems Can contain 64,000 Subdirectories in one Directory Uses checksums to improve reliability

The Full Switch When switching fully to Linux here are some things to keep in mind: -Make sure you have time to play around with it before or when first getting used to it (in other words if you don’t know what your doing and need the computer for class, work, etc. it may be best to hold off on what your doing or to play with it in a virtual machine using a program such as Virtualbox or VMWare before official switching to Linux)

The Full Switch (Continued) -If you don’t know exactly if you will have every application you will need, virtualize or dual-boot your system. Linux also offers Virtualbox and VMWare, so you can virtualize a Windows system from within your Linux system or vice versa. -Although alternative applications may even be better than some paid Microsoft applications, you need to make sure extensions of files match, especially when your planning on swapping files back and forth in the office with Windows/Mac OSX users

Now for a Demonstration And Then Questions
