Why study Philosophy? Philosophy is Great Preparation. A philosophy degree will prepare you with serious training for a number of important transferable skills such as creative problem solving, critical analysis, argument construction and persuasive writing. It is also excellent preparation for further study.

To study philosophy is to grapple with questions that have occupied humankind for millennia, in conversation with some of the greatest thinkers who have ever lived. It is the base note to all other subjects, the drum beat to the rhythm of learning.

The unexamined life is not worth living. Socrates 470-399BCE

How many legs does this elephant have?

Much of the philosophical debate over perception hinges on the question of how much of what we perceive is really a feature of the world and how much is a feature of our minds. In other words, how much of what we are perceiving is really out there?

Perception: How do you know which line is longest? Is the dot at the front or the back of the cube?

Let women share the rights and she will emulate the virtues of men. Mary Wollstonecraft 1759-1797

How do you know what is right? What is truth? What is this based upon? What is the relationship between mind and body?

Always recognise that human individuals are ends, and do not use them as means to your end. Immanuel Kant 1724-1804

So why study philosophy? Skills you acquire studying philosophy are highly marketable, especially in a volatile and rapidly changing economic climate. The skills that philosophy teaches you will always be in high demand: the ability to think and write clearly, the ability to bring to light unnoticed presuppositions, to explain complex ideas clearly, to tease out connections and implications, to see things in a broader context, to challenge accepted belief.
