Around the World in 80 minutes

WORLD Fair (background) 2nd annual WORLD Fair 150 third and fourth graders to campus 20 international countries represented Roxanne Talk about what the students do at the fair The WORLD International Learning Center at Stetson University hosted our second annual WORLD Fair for 3rd and 4th graders from local schools last March. We invited 150 third and fourth grade students from two local elementary schools for a day of learning and immersion into other cultures. The students were in the Hollis Center gym going from station to station learning about different cultures. Stetson's International Students created a table and talked to the school children about the culture from their home country. This included foods that country eats, games the kids there play and what life in that other country is like. Each table had some sort of activity for the elementary students to do after the Stetson students share their culture and what it is like growing up in their home country. The Stetson students loved to answer questions about their background and share their culture with others. 

How we did it Collaboration Stetson University WORLD: David and Leighan Rinker Center for International Learning Stetson University Center for Community Engagement Stetson University Education Department Stetson University School of Music Stetson University Business School Volusia County Schools Roxanne speaks about this. Kristyn can come in with the Education Department and Volusia County Schools if needed With lots of collaboration the creation of the WORLD Fair was fairly easy. The WORLD Office set up the date of the event and sent out the formal invitations with program details. When setting the date the days of blackout for the FSA were taken into account and worked around. The office worked on all the logistics, like arranging for the space, tables, chairs, electrical cords etc. as well as purchasing the supplies that the international students requested for their presentations. In addition we created a passport for the elementary students to use and facilitated the set up of the event on the actual day. The biggest task that our office had was to collaborate with other organizations around campus. We worked with different departments at Stetson to help them find ways to include their students in our event. Our music department sent a professor and students with a tabla demonstration They taught the elementary students about India and the music and showed them how to play the drums. The Center for Community engagement helped us with our ties to the community and to recruit schools to the event. They were the main contact with the local schools and helped to communicate all the logistics, forms and anticipated attendance counts. The center also sent students to help set up as well as did an activity about the importance of voting The communication Department tasked their students with finding ways to share learning across cultures. They did not have a specific country they represented, but instead created an activity that showed how everyone no matter their culture has commonality The Education Department sent students to observe and evaluate the event from an educators perspective. The ESOL (English speakers of other languages) professor sent her students to read books from other cultures and help the elementary students relate those books to their cultures. Some of the stories were even in another language so both “sets” of students worked together using the pictures to try and figure out what the story was saying. This allowed the college students and elementary students to “feel” what it is like when you don’t understand a language.

Why 3rd and 4th grade? Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standards 3rd graders learn about the different cultures that settled, impacted the Americas. 4th graders learn about Florida history and how each country that explored and settled in Florida brought their own culture, games and lifestyle. Kristyn Old enough to really engage and learn and remember 3rd graders learn about the different cultures that settled in the Americas and how they impacted the Americas culture. 4th graders learn about Florida history and how each country that explored and settled in Florida brought their own culture, games and lifestyle to the current culture of Florida. 3rd grade SS.3.G.4.2 Identify the cultures that have settled the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Students will:  describe the various cultures that have settled throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, including, but not limited to, Native Americans, Africans, and Europeans.  identify how various cultures have impacted the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. SS.3.G.4.3 Compare the cultural characteristics of diverse populations in one of the five regions of the United States with Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean. Students will:  use a variety of maps and/or photographs to compare the cultural characteristics of diverse populations in one of the five regions of the United States with Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean.  compare cultures on a variety of topics, including, but not limited to housing, music, transportation, food, recreation, language, holidays, beliefs, customs.  recognize the five regions of the United States, as well as the boundaries of Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, and demonstrate a clear awareness of how these populations differ in various cultural characteristics. SS.3.G.4.4 Identify contributions from various ethnic groups to the United States. Students will:  identify contributions to the arts, language, music, or traditions from various ethnic groups to the United States, such as Native Americans, Hispanics, Africans, Asians, and Europeans.  recognize the difference between the various ethnic groups within the United States and match the group to the contribution. Looking at the Social Studies standards it doesn't "fit" into any one standard exactly because this event is not about Florida. However, it works with Social Studies and the history of Florida because other countries came over and explored and settled the U.S. (and Florida). They brought over their own culture, games and lifestyle. The students would be learning about the cultures of other countries and be able to synthesize how some of our culture was created or influenced from other nations.  This would kind of fall under  SS.4.A.3.2 Describe causes and effects of European colonization on the Native American tribes of Florida.    define and describe European colonization in Florida.   summarize the effects of European colonization on Native American tribes (They could see how other cultures impacted our culture, and the similarities between our culture and other nations)  SS.4.A.3.7 Identify nations (Spain, France, England) that controlled Florida before it became a United States territory. They would be learning about the cultures in these three nations.

Tying it all together Kristyn After learning about all the different cultures, the students learn about how the American culture is today by voting for their favorite country. Uncle Sam visited and talked about the importance of voting and why Americans have the right and duty to vote.
