NSO prepares for country-wide eclipse viewing project National Science Foundation • Division of Astronomical Sciences Prepared by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy SCIENCE PEOPLE TECHNOLOGY NSO prepares for country-wide eclipse viewing project The Citizen Continental-America Telescopic Eclipse (CATE) Experiment team returned from a successful trip to Indonesia to observe the March 2016 eclipse. The trip provided an opportunity to test the plans and equipment the team will use to gather data for a 90-minute movie from across the United States during the 2017 solar eclipse. The team returned with a wealth of new data, and lessons learned to ensure success of the 2017 activity. The Indonesia team, which consisted of students from across the United States, spent the summer of 2016 at the National Solar Observatory in Tucson where they produced improvements for the 2017 equipment, and created training videos for the more than 60 volunteers in the CATE 2017 experiment. Final preparations are underway for rolling out the official Citizen Cate effort for the August 21st 2017 eclipse. This will be the first total solar eclipse in the USA since 1918, and Citizen Cate will be directly involving members of the public in obtaining scientific data. Citizen CATE viewing locations during the 2016 Indonesian eclipse. Undergraduate students from four Universities travelled to Indonesia to test the Citizen CATE equipment in preparation for the 2017 Great American Eclipse. One image of the eclipse obtained at each site are shown.
