Background Information First Battle of Manassas – Bull Run Occurred on July 21,1861 General Irvin McDowell – commander of the Union Army – 35,000 troops General P.G.T. Beauregard – commander of the Confederate force – 22,000 troops Union Army lost this battle at Bull Run

Union Commander – North/Yankees Colonel Elmer Ellsworth (killed; McDowell takes over)
