Dividing Whole Numbers Section 1.6 Dividing Whole Numbers

Dividing Whole Numbers Finding out how much belongs to one group. Idea There are 5 people who won the blackout bingo of $500, how much will each person receive?

Set - Up

Division Steps Count the number of digits in the divisor, find that place in the dividend, underline it. Ask yourself, “What number (C) times the dividend is closest to the underlined portion without going over?” Place that number (C) on the division line above the last digit underlined. Multiply that number (C) with the divisor and subtract it from the underlined dividend part. Carry the next number down of the dividend. Repeat steps 2 - 5

Example

Example 1015 / 5

Example 1476 / 12

Word Problems Key Words or Phrases Examples Symbols Divide Divide 10 by 5 Quotient The quotient of 64 and 4 Divided by 9 divided by 3 Divided $100 divided equally among five people Shared equally among 15 crates shared equally among 3 stores Per 100 miles per 2 h ours

Example Calculators can be packed 24 to a box. If 497 calculators are to be packed but only full boxes are shipped, how many full boxes are shipped? How many calculators are left over and not shipped?

Example Juanita, Carol and Tina bought 10 dozen pencils. They want to share the pencils equally, so how many pencils does each person receive?
