Primary and secondary packaging Primary and secondary packaging is often created from a flat form. Transportation is an expensive part of the overall cost of a product; moving flat packed boxes helps to keep the cost down. Primary packaging holds the product. This is the package that you would see on a shelf in a shop. It will give a level of protection to the product, promote the product and also give product information. Secondary packaging is used for storage and transportation of goods. Used in warehouses where lots of the same product are packed together and stacked, waiting to be distributed to shops, or opened to fill gaps in shelves. Symbols and signs on packaging On secondary packaging (the outside carton holding batches of the product), the following symbols are commonly used: AQA GCSE Design and Technology: graphic products

The impact of packaging on the environment Strategies for controlling waste Prevention Not using packaging Minimisation Reduce the amount of packaging Reuse Use the packaging after the product has been removed Recycle Make the packaging out of the materials that can be recycled. Remember energy is used in the recycling of products, so even though it’s green there’s a cost Energy recovery Use waste material to fuel power stations or warm homes Disposal Bury the material in a landfill AQA GCSE Design and Technology: graphic products

Intellectual property, patents and copyright Intellectual property – to own an idea or creation. Patent – a patent is a way of protecting a designer’s idea against someone stealing the technical and functional parts of their design. A patent offers protection against theft for 20 years. Copyright – music, artistic work and literature cannot be covered by a patent. To ensure that the intellectual properties of these are protected, a copyright would be granted.
