Advanced Placement (AP) Classes Classes of high rigor, taught by highly qualified teachers The curriculum for each subject is defined by College Board located in Princeton, NJ Exam is set and controlled by College Board www.CollegeBoard.org Each exam costs $87.00 Students are awarded Honors points for grades (A,B,C) in each class

Benefits Of AP Classes Allows students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school Students who take AP Classes have much higher college graduation rates than students with the same academic capabilities who have not taken AP Classes (2005 National Center for Educational Accountability … NCEA) Many colleges award credits for passing scores (3, 4, 5)—check university’s policy May Earn AP Scholar distinction for passing multiple exams

AP Calculus AB & BC Pre-requisite: Excelling grade in Pre-Calculus Honors All students in Calc. AB&BC are encouraged to take the AP Exam and may earn credit at some universities with a score or 3, 4, or 5 AP Calculus AB or BC exam may meet first year college Math/Calculus requirement at some universities with a passing score Characteristics of successful students Perseveres in the face of adversity Uses multiple resources to better understand concepts Is self-motivated Utilizes good time-management skills

AP Language and Composition Focus on composition, especially rhetorical analysis Outside reading of books by American authors: The Grapes of Wrath, The Crucible, The Jungle, The Great Gatsby, Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Tipping Point, Wild Thoughts from Wild Places, Walden, and one choice of book group book Credit awarded by university may transfer as Composition 101 or 102 credit. (Check college website) Exam format (3 essays): Rhetorical Analysis Argumentation essay Synthesis/Argument essay 50-55 Critical reading multiple choice questions Further questions about this class please contact jessica.mcdonald@dvusd.org

English Literature and Composition Careful, close reading and critical analysis of works of literary merit Authors chosen from AP English Course Description for the Eng Lit & Comp Exam or those appearing on previous AP Lit exams Structure, style, theme, as well as literary and rhetorical elements such as figurative language, imagery, symbolism, tone Course includes intensive study of representative works from various genres and periods Writing assignments emphasize refinement of personal expression and style at level equivalent to composition assignments at freshman college level Critical analysis makes up bulk of student writing—annotation, free-writing, creative projects, and reading journals also incorporated Students given frequent opportunities to write and revise formal analysis papers, in addition to many timed, in class essays

AP Studio Art For students seriously interested in the practical experience of art Highly recommended that students have previous art training Students submit portfolios for evaluation at the end of the school year Benefits increasing the possibility that they will receive credit complete a focused portfolio Pre-requisites: Intro to Art Drawing 1-2 Drawing 3-4/Placement Criteria Grades: 11, 12

AP Psychology Students in grades 11 and 12 Systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings. Explore the world from a variety of perspectives Assume the responsibility of reasoning, analyzing, and understanding Explorations and discoveries made by psychologists over the past century Differing approaches adopted by psychologists, including the biological, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic, psychodynamic, and socio-cultural perspectives. Dual Enrollment Classes/Program Students are enrolled in both high school and college-level classes concurrently ( Rio Salado Community College) Earn both high school and college credits concurrently (College credit awarded for grades A, B, or C) The fees for the college credits are the same as Maricopa Community Colleges (see handout) Credits are directly transferred to the three Arizona State Universities (see aztransfer.com/handout) Must limit absences to less than six per semester Must have responsible work and study habits

Dual Enrollment classes at SDOHS 2012-2013 ACCUPLACER Testing at O’Connor March 12-16 for: ENG101/102 MAT151 MAT187 All other classes require a passing score for AIMS Reading and/or Writing
