Series Introduction: Communion Preparing for the Lord’s Supper using: Law: The 10 Commandments Gospel: The Apostles’ Creed Confession: The Lord’s Prayer

Sermon Introduction: The 10 Commandments Distinguishing without dividing: The Law and The Gospel Justification and Sanctification If we are justified by faith in Jesus and sanctified by the Holy Spirit, then what does the OT law do for Christians?

Introduction to the 10 Commandments: Only two are stated positively (3-4), the rest are “you shall nots”. Divided into God-ward and people-ward commandments. Involve our internal motivations not just our outward actions. All of the other OT laws are applications Express God’s moral law that has always been right for everyone. A gracious gift from God Were the basis of Israel’s national covenant with God. Have never been the basis of being forgiven by God. The first five contain a reason to obey them.

The Ten Commandments: 1 Exodus 20:1-3 (NIV84) 1 And God spoke all these words: 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3 [1] “You shall have no other gods before me. God’s graciously saving Israel from Egypt is the reason that they should obey God. Jesus graciously saving us from the kingdom of darkness, gives us a new reason to obey His commands (John 13).

The Ten Commandments: 2 Exodus 20:4-6 (NIV84) 4 [2] “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. The dangerous part of disobeying God by worshiping false gods, is that the real God will punish us.

The Ten Commandments: 3 Exodus 20:7 (NIV84) 7 [3] “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. Having the judge of the universe counting us guilty, is a good reason to avoid misusing His name.

The Ten Commandments: 4 Exodus 20:8-11 (NIV84) 8 [4] “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. The reason to keep the sabbath is that God is our creator.

The Ten Commandments: 5 Exodus 20:12 (NIV84) 12 [5] “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. This is the first positive promised attached to a command. This is the only reason given for obeying any of the people related commandments.

The Ten Commandments: 6-10 Exodus 20:13-17 (NIV84) 13 [6] “You shall not murder. 14 [7] “You shall not commit adultery. 15 [8] “You shall not steal. 16 [9] “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 17 [10] “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” No reasons are given to obey any of these commandments. Doing to others as we would have them do to us is an implied reason (Matthew 7:12).

Deuteronomy 6:1-7 (NIV84) – Moses’ application of the 10 Commandments 1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, O Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your fathers, promised you. 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Ephesians 6:1-4 (NIV84) – Paul’s application of the 10 Commandments 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. If you are a parent, teach your children God’s word! If you are child, listen to your parents teach you God’s word! But, don’t trust own observance of the law to justify you before God! Put your faith in Jesus instead!

Two Covenant Options Exodus 24:7-8 (NIV84) – Bad news 7 Then [Moses] took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded, “We will do everything the Lord has said; we will obey.” 8 Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.” Matthew 26:26-28 (NIV84) – Good news 26 While they were eating [the Passover], Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” 27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

Martin Luther’s Commentaries: Martin Luther described feeling himself born again while reading about the gift of God’s righteousness in Romans 1:16-17. John Wesley also described feeling himself born again while hearing Martin Luther’s introduction to Romans. Listen to Martin Luther’s reflections on Galatians 1:3b-4a “3…the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave himself for our sins.”

LAW: The Ten Commandments (1 of 2) Exodus 20:3-5,6-8, 12-17 (NIV84) 3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.” 4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them.” 7 “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.” 8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” 12 “Honor your father and your mother.”

LAW: The Ten Commandments (2 of 2) Exodus 20:3-5,6-8, 12-17 (NIV84) 13 “You shall not murder.” 14 “You shall not commit adultery.” 15 “You shall not steal.” 16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” 17 “You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

GOSPEL: The Apostles’ Creed (1 of 2) 1. I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. 2. And, I believe in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord. 3. Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary. 4. Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into hades. 5. The third day he rose again from the dead. 6. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. 7. From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

GOSPEL: The Apostles’ Creed (2 of 2) 8. And, I believe in the Holy Ghost. 9. I believe in the holy universal church: the communion of saints. 10. The forgiveness of sins. 11. The resurrection of the body. 12. And the life everlasting. Amen.

CONFESSION: The Lord’s Prayer Matthew 6:9b-13 (NIV84) 9 …“ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ [For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]
