ISTE-NETS Standards 4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility - Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in  an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information.

What is Digital Etiquette? Digital etiquette or netiquette as it is sometimes called, is a basic set of rules you should follow in order to make the internet better for others, and better for you. It's just as important to treat people with courtesy and respect online as it is in real life.

Focus Question What rules should be followed when communicating with technology in order to ensure communication is effective, appropriate, and polite?

Tell us about your habits… What digital etiquette rules are you sure to always follow in your digital interactions with others? How did you learn these rules?

Digital Etiquette Examples Please watch the video in the link below- this is a great resource to use with students as well! Brain Pop- Digital Etiquette http://www.brainpop.com/technology/computersandinternet/digitaletiqu ette/

Etiquette or Not? An hour before class, a student remembers a writing assignment is due. The student runs to the library and cuts/pastes information from a website into a word document. This document is turned in for credit with no source listed.

Etiquette or Not? When communicating through email, the all caps button is accidentally pressed making the entire email in capital letters. After writing the multiple paragraph email, the writer realizes the mistake but is short on time and decides to send anyway rather than retyping everything.

Etiquette or Not? In a movie theatre, you do not silence your phone because you are waiting on an important call. When the call comes through you immediately silence the ringer and take the call outside.

Etiquette or Not? You receive a detailed email asking for specific details about an upcoming event that you are in charge of. You are not sure about the answers to some of the questions. You respond indicating you received the email and are working on getting answers quickly. You reply two weeks later with accurate details.

Etiquette or Not? You are included on a group text message as one of 10 recipients inviting you to a social event. After you confirm your attendance, you proceed to ask the host questions about start time, appropriate dress, and directions within the same message chain.

What Have You Learned? Based on the information presented, how can your digital etiquette improve? How will you teach this information to your students? .

Extension Activity Create a Presi (click here for instructions) about Digital Etiquette to show your students based on the 7 rules listed in the link below. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/7-rules-to-teach-kids-online- etiquette
