Fire Extinguisher Inspections

Fire Extinguisher Monthly Inspections This presentation demonstrates how to properly perform a monthly inspection Fire extinguishers must be inspected monthly, no more than 31 days between each inspection Monthly fire extinguisher inspections are required by Massachusetts, Boston Fire, NFPA, The Joint Commission.

Inspections Annual fire extinguisher maintenance is performed by a professional fire protection company. These companies have the proper tools and training to ensure proper maintenance. Once a fire extinguisher passes its annual inspection or reissued, it is verified with a dated inspection tag. A visual inspection is conducted monthly by in-house staff. EHS staff will inspect extinguisher tags during building inspections to ensure they are up to date and safe to use.

How to Inspect Extinguisher Extinguisher positioned in designated location No damage to the unit No obstructions to unit or its view Extinguisher fully charged and operational Absent of obvious signs of physical damage: corrosion, leakage, or dents Pressure gauge indicator in operating range Pull-pin in place. Safety seal is intact Date and initial tag verifying monthly inspection

Inspection Tag Includes Vendor Name Date: Include date, month and year Example: 03/23/17 Initials of Inspector

Location & Access Verify extinguishers are in their intended location and not blocked

Location & Access Ensure units are easily visible and a locator sign posted above

Mounting & Instructions Ensure unit is mounted on a wall or set in a cabinet with instructions facing outward

Inspecting the Pin Ensure the plastic safety seal (tamper) indicator is intact

Inspecting the Pin Ensure the pin is securely in place

Inspecting the gauge Ensure pressure gauge is in the operable position (green zone)

Physical Condition Determine the fullness of extinguisher by “hefting” (lifting) Ensure there are no signs of physical damage to the body of the extinguisher or the hose or nozzle

Inspecting the Hose/Nozzle Ensure the hose or nozzle is free of obstructions

Contact Information If an extinguisher does not pass inspection, take it out of service and replace with new. If you have any questions or concerns regarding fire extinguishers contact the EHS at: CRC: 617-353-4094 MED: 617-638-8830 THANK YOU
