Teaching for Mastery and Greater Depth Sarah Anderson Swaythling Primary School

Disclaimer! This session is aiming to develop understanding of the terms ‘mastery’ and ‘greater depth’ so that we know what we are looking for in children’s books and we choose and create appropriate tasks at the teaching stage Not focusing on tracking systems and moderation 

Defining Mastery

Mastery of Mathematics How do you know if a child has mastered a concept? What will they be able to do/ show you?

Mastery and Greater Depth What would you expect to see from a child who had mastered the curriculum (expected) compared to a child with greater depth?

NCETM Assessment Materials Have a look at the NCETM materials – what makes the greater depth questions more challenging? How do the required skills levels differ?

Unpicking Mastery and Greater Depth Choose a curriculum statement for your chosen year group and create a ‘mastery’ and ‘greater depth’ question based on it. How will the skills differ? How will you extend and challenge?
