“ The hymn to Christ has two uneven stanzas, but their themes are consistent. The first relates to Jesus as creator; the second, to redemption. The first considers the created world, including the material creation and supernatural beings. The second considers the reconciliation of these various created elements which have gone astray. Therefore, Paul contributed to the two main themes of the Bible: creation and redemption. Together, the two stanzas make a strong case for the supremacy of Christ. He is Lord over creation, and he is the Lord of the new creation ~ R. R. Melick, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon Vol. 32, (Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers, 1991), 214.

“ The next six verses of the letter [Colossians 1:15-20] are generally, and rightly, reckoned among the most important Christological passages in the New Testament. ~ N. T. Wright, Colossians, Philemon: An introduction and commentary, (Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, 1986), 67.

“Jesus: All the Fullness of Deity in Bodily Form” Today’s Message: “Jesus: All the Fullness of Deity in Bodily Form” God Was Pleased

“Was Pleased” Colossians 1:19-20 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. ----- Meeting Notes (7/1/16 12:06) ----- Wallace and Rober de Bruce

“ The verb “was pleased” sometimes comes close to the idea of “choose” or “elect” (cf. Luke 12:32; 1 Cor. 1:21; Gal. 1:15), and this is probably the case here. We might paraphrase, “God in all his fullness has chosen to dwell in Christ.” ~ D. J Moo, The letters to the Colossians and to Philemon (Grand Rapids, MI: William B. Eerdmans Pub. Co.) 132 .

“Jesus: All the Fullness of Deity in Bodily Form” Today’s Message: “Jesus: All the Fullness of Deity in Bodily Form” God Was Pleased To Dwell

“To Dwell” Colossians 1:19-20 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. ----- Meeting Notes (7/1/16 12:06) ----- Wallace and Rober de Bruce

“ But the peculiar force of its use here lies in the probability that it was employed in a technical sense by the heretical teachers at Colossae (as it was in a number of gnostic systems) to denote the totality of divine emanations or agencies, those supernatural powers under whose control men were supposed to live. These powers were considered to be intermediaries between God and the world; any communication between God and the world, in either direction, must pass through the spheres in which they exercised rule. It was therefore necessary to treat them with becoming respect.

“ Paul undermines the whole of this theosophical apparatus in one simple, direct affirmation: the fullness or totality of divine essence and power has taken up its residence in Christ. In other words, He is the one mediator between God and the world of mankind, and all the attributes and activities of God—His spirit, word, wisdom and glory - are displayed in Him. Simpson, E. K., & Bruce, F. F. (1957). (pp. 206207). Grand Rapids, MI: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.

“Jesus: All the Fullness of Deity in Bodily Form” Today’s Message: “Jesus: All the Fullness of Deity in Bodily Form” God Was Pleased To Dwell To Reconcile

“To Reconcile” Colossians 1:19-20 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. ----- Meeting Notes (7/1/16 12:06) ----- Wallace and Rober de Bruce

“ It was God’s good pleasure, moreover, to reconcile all things to Himself through Christ. The fullness of the divine energy is manifested in Christ not only in His creative work but in reconciliation also. And while this reconciling activity has particular reference to redeemed humanity, it has a universal reference too. In reconciliation as in creation the work of Christ has a cosmic significance; as we are told in Eph. 1:10, it is God’s eternal purpose to sum all things up in Christ. Simpson, E. K., & Bruce, F. F. (1957). (pp. 206207). Grand Rapids, MI: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.

Why are these people getting dunked today?

What is Baptism?

What is Baptism? It is the public declaration and outward expression of the believer’s inner reality, volitionally done to symbolize a person’s entrance into a relationship with Jesus Christ.

What is being symbolized in baptism?

What is being symbolized in baptism? Romans 6:1-4 1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning, so that grace may increase? 2By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

HUGE POINT!!Declaration of the believer’s union with Christ
