Camera Parts and Functions Shutter Speeds

Bellwork Reflect on yesterday’s lesson. Pair-Share with a Learning Partner: List the 3 different types of digital cameras available. Then choose the one that you think would be best to use to select a specific shutter speed. Non-volunteers will be chosen to share responses.

Shutter Speed The amount of time the shutter is open. While the shutter is open, the image sensor is exposed to light. Think of it as how long the camera “sees” the image. Measured in Fractions of Seconds Common shutter speeds: 1 whole second,1/2,1/4,1/8,1/15, 1/30,1/60,1/125,1/250,1/500,1/1000 B = Bulb – shutter is held open for a specified amount of time.

Shutter Speed Fast Shutter Speeds (1/125 and higher) are used to stop motion and will “freeze” the subject in action. http://forums.steves-digicams.com/attachments/sports-action-photos/139343d1247606891-first-time-football-shots-harrison-1.jpg

Shutter Speed Slow Shutter Speeds (1/60 or slower) can be used to portray movement or speed. The technique below is called PANNING, which is captured by moving the camera with the subject as the shutter briefly exposes the image sensor to light. http://www.rooks.ca/photos/panningBiker.jpg

Shutter Speed Very Slow Shutter Speeds (5 seconds or slower) can be used in very low light situations to obtain correct exposure, or achieve dramatic effects. http://tech2.in.com/media/images/img_3798_city_trail.jpg

Shutter Speed Beware! As your shutter speed decreases, your chances of capturing a blurry image increase because you must hold the camera steady for a longer period of time. It is recommended to use a tripod at 1/30 or slower to reduce blur caused by a photographer holding the camera in order to take a photo using a long exposure.

Camera Time! Review individual cameras, note that differences between camera makes and models exist. (Teacher sets ISO to a specified number and aperture wide open for consistency). Shutter Release Button – Takes the picture Playback / Review Images – edit in the camera before transferring images to your computer. This saves time! Delete – All images or only specific photos. Shutter Speed – How to change shutter speeds Focus – Use the focusing ring or use the shutter button (press lightly) to focus the image before snapping it. A/F and M/F setting review.

AB Partner Activity: Choose one partner to be the “A” and the other the “B”. The A will go first, followed by the B. Set the camera on M (manual). Take a picture of your partner at these shutter speeds: 1/4,1/8,1/15,1/60, 1/250, 1/1000 Review the images and write down the results under your bellwork: which ones are blurry? Too dark? Too light? BE READY TO SHARE
