Principal Parts of a Verb All verbs have four principal parts. Base Form: BE Present Participle: BEING Simple Past: WAS, WERE Past Participle: BEEN All the verb tenses are formed from these principal parts. Principal Parts of a Verb

Principal Parts of a Verb You can use the base form (except the base form of be) and the past form by themselves as main verbs. Present and past participles must always be used with auxiliary, or helping verbs, if they are the verb phrase of the sentence. Monkeys climb. (base form) Monkeys climbed. (past form) Monkeys are climbing. (present participle + helping verb) Monkeys have climbed. (past participle + helping verb. Principal Parts of a Verb

Write each sentence with the correct form of the principal part of the verb in parentheses. After the sentence, write which form was used.
