Theme Movie: The Truman Show

Brief Introduction The Truman Show is a film which charts the life of Truman Burbank, a boy adopted at birth by a fictitious television company - Omnicom. He is filmed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three hundred and sixty-five days a year so every second of his life is recorded for ‘live’ television. Truman doesn’t know this. He doesn’t know that his friends and family are all actors. He doesn’t know that the events in his life are all carefully monitored and controlled by the production crew of the television network. He doesn’t know he is the star of a television show nor that he isn’t living in the real world.

Character List Truman: Played by Jim Carrey who was chosen out of five unwanted pregnancies and the first child to be legally adopted by a corporation. He is unaware that his daily life is broadcast continuously around the world. Meryl: Truman's wife, who holds a profession as a nurse at the local hospital. Since the show relies on product placement for revenue, Meryl regularly shows off various items she has recently "purchased", which becomes one of the many oddities that makes Truman question his life.

Character List Christof: The creator of The Truman Show. At the climax/resolution, he speaks to Truman over a loudspeaker, revealing the nature of Truman's situation. Marlon: Truman's best friend since early childhood who promises Truman he would never lie to him, despite the latest events in Truman's life. Sylvia: Truman's college schoolmate. She was hired to play a fellow student at Truman's college, named Lauren. She became romantically involved with Truman and tried to reveal to him the truth about his life, but was thrown out of the show before she could do so. She is also a protester against The Truman Show, urging Christof to release its lead.

Movie Clip: The Truman Show (2m10s)

Movie Clip: The Truman Show (2m10s) Truman Burbank is unaware that his entire life is a hugely popular 24-hour-a-day TV series. And the show's director and master manipulator is called Christof. In this movie clip an audience named Sylvia called Christof and asked him if he felt guilty to keep Truman as a prisoner on an immense domed city-size soundstage, simulating(假装的)Seahaven.

Sylvia: What the right do you have to take a baby and turn his life into some kind of mockery(笑柄)? Don’t you 2)__________? Christof: I have given Truman 3)_______. The world, the place you live in, is 4) _______. Seahaven's the way 5) __________.

Watching Task: Complete the conversation. Sylvia: He’s not a performer, he’s 6)________. Look at him! Look at 7)_______! Christof: He can 8) __________ if he was more than just a vague ambition, if he was absolutely determined to 9)________, there’s no way we could 10) ___________. I think what really11)__________,caller, is that, ultimately, Truman prefers his cell, as you call it. Sylvia: That’s 12)__________. You are so wrong. And he will prove you wrong.
