Leadership Nuggets Fon R. Holloway Good Morning All, as stated in the introduction I am Fon and I want to say right up front that I am a work in progress. What you received from me today will not be absolute and all cases and I am no expert on the topic of leadership. What I can tell you is a believe that I am growing each and every day as a leader and the things that I am going to talk about are things that I subscribed to and believe are true. My only goal to today is to get each of you to either learn something new OR more likely hear something that you have heard before in a different kind of way and commit to either putting it in use or teaching or sharing the concept with someone us that you influence. Is that fair enough. Lastly, while I am the designated speaker for this time period it is not my intention to speak for the whole time but to spark some conversation among all of you so that some of the expertise in the group is shared

One of the things that I didn't mention in my bio is that 20 years ago I was introduced to a book called the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership written by John Maxwell. That was my introduction to John Maxwell, who is known around the world as one of the #1 experts in the area of leadership. I have been reading his material, books, and receiving a daily message from him every since then. He has been my mentor for all of those years and I just got to meet him in August when I completed his certification program. Most of what I share today are snippets from 2 titles I am showing on this slide.

INFLUENCE Leadership is… The true meaning of leadership is influence – nothing more, nothing less. Every thing rises and/or falls on leadership. Law of EF Hutton – when the real leader speaks, people listen INFLUENCE

Goal is to INCREASE influence LEADERSHIP The more you increase your influence, the more you increase your leadership

Influence Inventory WHO do you influence? Principle – as a leader “attract who you are, not who you want” List top 3 characteristics of who you want on your team… Do you possess those characteristics?

How do you influence others? Influence Inventory How do you influence others? FORCE Principle – how you influence people will determine how many, how long, and how effectively you influence them. Force – no choice in the decision

How do you influence others? Influence Inventory How do you influence others? INTIMIDATION Intimidation – my way or the highway

How do you influence others? Influence Inventory How do you influence others? MANIPULATION Manipulation – there’s a winner and a loser

How do you influence others? Influence Inventory How do you influence others? POSITION Positional – we follow because we have to

How do you influence others? Influence Inventory How do you influence others? EXCHANGE Exchange – we both win something

How do you influence others? Influence Inventory How do you influence others? PERSUASION Persuasion – we follow because we want to

How do you influence others? Influence Inventory How do you influence others? RESPECT Respect – we follow because of the request and respect for the influencer

How MANY do you influence? Influence Inventory How MANY do you influence? Everyone influences someone, few people influence a lot of people

WHEN do you influence others? Influence Inventory WHEN do you influence others? Leaders sense: LEADERS ARE READERS Teachable Moments

WHEN do you influence others? Influence Inventory WHEN do you influence others? Leaders sense: Hurt enough to have to change Learn enough to want to change Receive enough to be able to change Breakthrough Places

WHEN do you influence others? Influence Inventory WHEN do you influence others? Leaders sense: Catalyst times

WHY do you influence others? Influence Inventory WHY do you influence others? Principle – why you do something will ultimately determine what you do Right motives are crucial to people because leadership functions on the basis of trust Continual wrong motives are a result of bad character

WHERE do you influence others? Influence Inventory WHERE do you influence others? Mistake – if I’m not on top, I can’t lead. Leadership is influence not position When I get to the top, then I will learn to lead If I were on top, everyone would follow – if people don’t follow you now, they won’t follow you then When I get to the top I will be able to do anything – when you get to the top you have to practice servant leadership

Insights into influence Leadership is INFLUENCE Our influence with others is usually not in ALL AREAS With influence comes RESPONSIBILITY My influence with others is either POSITIVE or NEGATIVE Our influence can GROW People of positive influence ADD VALUE to others

The toughest person to lead is yourself Only leaders who have followed well know how to lead others well. Learn Followership

Defining Moments Define Your Leadership Ground breakers Heart breakers Cloud breakers Chart breakers Ground breakers take you into an area you haven’t been before Heart breakers are when you realize things are going very well Cloud breakers let you soar like you’ve never soared before Chart breakers take you beyond your expectations Experience is no teacher unless you learn from it. Focus not on what happens to you but on what happens in you during the process of the experience. At every defining moment, ask yourself one question: What did you learn?

When You Get Kicked in the Rear, You Know You’re Out in Front How to hold up against Criticism…

WHO ARE YOU Know YOURSELF Step One: who Know Yourself – this is a reality issue. Know what you do well and what you don’t do well. Be prepared to be criticized – you cannot impart what you do not possess. Know YOURSELF

Change YOURSELF Step Two: Change Yourself – this is a responsibility issue. Leaders change first. Maintain the right attitude when criticized by not being defensive, looking for the grain of truth, making the necessary changes and taking the high road. Change YOURSELF

Forget YOURSELF Step Three: Forget Yourself – this is a security issue. Stop focusing on yourself. No one else is paying much attention to you. We all need grace and forgiveness Forget YOURSELF

Never Work a Day In Your Life Accomplish Attempt Meet Feel Motivate Believe Lead Passion separates the extraordinary from the ordinary. Passion enables you to: Believe things you would not have believed Feel think you would not have felt Attempt things you would not attempted Accomplish things you would not have accomplished Met people you would not have met Motivate people you would not have motivated Lead people you would not have led Passion is the key to Potential

The Best Leaders Are Listeners Listening is the best way to learn Listening can keep problems from escalating Listening can improve the organization

Get In the Zone and Stay There Ask yourself, “What do you do well?” Get specific Find your strength zone

A Leader’s First Responsibility Is to: According to Jack Welch, the CEO of all CEOS… Six Rules for Leadership: #1: Control your destiny; or someone else will #2: Face reality as it is, not as it was or as you wish it were #3: Be candid with everyone #4: Don’t manage; lead #5: Change before you have to #6: If you don’t have a competitive advantage, don’t compete Define Reality

To See How the Leader Is Doing Are the people… FOLLOWING CHANGING Q1 – all leaders have two common characteristics – first they are going somewhere and second, they are able to persuade people to follow Q2 – Are the people willing to make a change for the sake of progress Q3 – The best leaders help people with more than their jobs, they help with their lives Q4 – Leadership is meant to lift others and help others succeed GROWING SUCCEEDING Look at the People

Don’t Send Your Ducks to Eagle School You will frustrate the EAGLES You will frustrate the DUCKS You will frustrate YOURSELF

Your Biggest Mistake is… Not Asking What Mistake You’re Making Ask: “What Are We Missing?” Admit Your Own Mistakes and Weaknesses Accept Mistakes as the Price of Progress Give Permission to Push Back

Keep Learning to Keep Leading All great leaders invest themselves in a personal growth plan Invest In Yourself First

Keep Learning to Keep Leading To progress as a leader is to transition from being a person of answers to a person of lessons. Be a Continual Learner

Leaders Distinguish Themselves During Tough Times Leaders have to be willing to do things others are unwilling to do. They have to put themselves on the line. The Tough Call Demands Risk

Leaders Distinguish Themselves During Tough Times Difficult times faced by leaders begins within them, not with others. Doing the right thing isn’t always easy, but it is necessary if a leader wants to maintain integrity and remain effective. The Tough Call Brings With It an Inward Battle

Experience Alone Is Not the Best Teacher Our attitude toward unplanned and unpleasant experiences determines our growth Lack of experience is costly Experience is also costly Evaluated experience lifts a person above the crowd

Be a Connector, Not Just a Climber Think Horizontal Focus on Relationships Value Cooperation Seek Partnerships Build Consensus Think Vertical Focus on Position Value Competition Seek Power Build Their Image If you climb without connecting you may gain authority but you won’t have many friends If you connect well but possess little desire to climb, you may end up with many friends but not much authority to accomplish anything Climbing and Connecting are not an either/or but a both/and.

The Choices You Make, Make You Standards for yourself will be higher than what others might set for you Helping people is more important than making them happy Your focus is on the present

Few Leaders Are Successful Unless a Lot of People Want Them to Be Mentors draw you up to them Supporters lift you up to a better you

You Only Get Answers to the Questions You Ask Some people see questions as a sign of ignorance. Leaders see them as a sign of engagement, curiosity, and the desire to improve.

Summary Leadership is all about influence Knowing who you influence really matters Leaders have to continually grow themselves Leaders have to genuine care about and grow their people. The greater the leader’s influence and growth the greater the team’s success
