Presentation transcript:

Design (Teleological) Argument Evidence of complex design in the world requires a complex designer. This designer is claimed to be God.

Evidence of complex design: -Human Eye -Human Hand

Evidence of design: -Solar System is just perfect for allowing the development of human life

William Paley: 1802 text ‘Natural Theology’ –The Watch and the Watchmaker IN crossing a heath, suppose I pitched my foot against a stone, and were asked how the stone came to be there, I might possibly answer, that it had lain there forever but suppose I had found a watch upon the ground, and it should be inquired how the watch happened to be in that place, I should hardly think of the answer which I had before given, that, for any thing I knew, the watch might have always been there. Yet why should not this answer serve for the watch as well as for the stone? For this reason, that, when we come to inspect the watch, we perceive (what we could not discover in the stone) that its several parts are put together for a purpose. we think that the watch must have had a maker: that there must have existed, at some time, and at some place or other, a designer or designers who formed it for the purpose which we find it actually to answer; who understoo its construction, and designed its use. For every indication of contrivance, every manifestation of design, which existed in the watch, there exists in the works of Nature there is precisely the same proof that the eye was [Created] for vision

Man made Natural Design

Student task 1: Create a list of at least…. Five examples of man made design Five examples of natural design

Student task 2: Write a short article reporting on William Paley’s design theory as commented on in his story of the ‘Watch and the Watchmaker’. OR Create a visual storyboard showing the key points in Paley’s theory.

Pair/Class activity Discuss your opinion of the design argument in pairs Is there evidence of design in the universe that can only be explained by God? Using specific examples, Has God designed human beings in his own image (‘Imago Dei’) or do you think we may have evolved from more primitive organisms (creatures)? Record your discussion and your key points, be prepared to share these in a class debate on the topic of ‘Intelligent Design’.
